When planning a trip to Disney World, weather is a huge factor for many reasons including when to plan your trip, what to pack, and how to plan each day. Many expect warm and sunny conditions year-round, but that is unfortunately not the case. From cold winter temperatures, hurricanes, and tropical storms, to excessive heat and humidity, it's extremely important to know what to expect to be prepared and also enjoy your vacation.
I am a Florida resident, Disney World annual passholder, and visit the Orlando-area theme parks multiple times per month throughout the year. In this article, we will go over a summary of the weather in central Florida each month and how to pack appropriately.
We will also go over which months of the year are the best for visiting central Florida based on the Disney World weather as well as considering other options such as crowd levels.

Florida Weather Patterns and Helpful Tips
It's important to know that Florida weather is always unpredictable and can change at any time regardless of the season or the weather forecast. Although Disney World usually has everything you'd need for purchase in case of extreme weather changes, usually it is more cost-effective and convenient to bring your own clothing and supplies from home. For example, rain ponchos at Disney World cost $12 for adults and $10 for kids, which for a large family can add up very quickly and become one more unnecessary expense. I always pre-purchase cheap ponchos from Target or Wal-Mart and keep one in my Disney backpack at all times in case of rain.
The heat, hurricanes, and rain are typically the three most relevant weather conditions you'll need to be aware of when planning your next trip. Below we break down how each of these weather conditions can affect your trip, and how to prepare for these varying types of weather.
Heat and Humidity: While summers can be a popular time to visit Disney World due to your kid's summer break from school, they can also be very exhausting and even dangerous with the high temperatures and humidity, which typically reaches over 95%. Especially this past summer, Florida has seen extremely hot days that can cause exhaustion, dehydration, and overall frustration that can ruin a vacation. Here are a few tips to help combat the brutal heat in Florida, especially during the summer months:
If families are visiting Disney World in the summer, the first suggestion I have is to break up your park days. This means, anywhere between noon and 3 pm, go back to your hotel and take a break. Whether it's taking a nap, swimming in your resort's pool, or just enjoying some much-needed air conditioning in the hotel room. I know this can be difficult because you want to see as much as you can throughout the day, but it makes the day so much more enjoyable. You'll also have more energy to last long enough to see the fireworks or nighttime show at the end of the night. At the very minimum, make a reservation at a table service restaurant during the hottest part of the day to take a break from the air conditioning.
This may seem obvious, but always use and reapply sunscreen throughout the day! The Florida sun is relentless and most of Disney World's theme parks do not have much shade. Even some of the restaurants, especially quick service, do not have indoor seating which some may be surprised to find.
Dress in comfortable and cool clothing. Cotton t-shirts and jeans are not recommended or comfortable during the summers at Disney World. We highly recommend choosing athleisure or wicking fabric to wear to soak up sweat and stay cool.
Fans and cooling towels are also great to use during hot days at the parks. We have seen lots of guests wearing neck fans to help circulate air around their faces as well as cooling towels which can help lower your body temperature during the summer.
Hurricanes: Florida's hurricane season starts in June and lasts through November. Disney World does a great job of preparing guests for hurricanes and helping reschedule any unexpected plan changes. However, be prepared for things you cannot control during hurricane seasons, such as park closures or torrential downpours throughout the day. We visited Disney World the week of Hurricane Dorian in 2019, and while the crowds in the parks cleared out very nicely, our planned park day and after hours party was canceled due to the storms. My biggest tip is just to make the best of it, and be prepared for the worst case scenarios. Hurricanes are very dangerous, and Disney will always prioritize safety when making decisions to close parks or events. Additionally, trip insurance can bring your family peace of mind when scheduling a Disney World vacation during hurricane season. Particularly in August and September, I would recommend purchasing trip insurance in case of any flight cancellations. Unfortunately, Disney cannot reschedule your flights!
Rain and Summer Storms: If you are planning your Disney World vacation between May and November, always bring a poncho or other rain gear. Especially in the summer months, I guarantee it will rain at least once during your trip. The good news is usually Florida rainstorms are usually relatively short and may even feel pleasant during a hot summer day. However, they can be very heavy and absolutely drench your clothing. The other piece of good news is normally Disney World still operates as normal during typical summer rainstorms. Some of the outdoor rides may shut down for a short period of time, especially if there is lightning, but overall it shouldn't ruin your day at the theme parks.

Disney World Weather by Month
The following section will detail the average high and low temperatures as well as the average precipitation levels per month at Walt Disney World. As expected, Florida weather can be unpredictable so always be sure to check the forecast a few days before your trip so you can plan accordingly. We will also summarize how we feel about the weather during these months through our own personal experiences visiting the parks. While it is all based on preference and your family's schedules, the weather should always be considered when planning and packing for your trip to central Florida.
January
Average High: 72 degrees
Average Low: 51 degrees
Average Precipitation: 2.35 inches
January is Florida's coldest month of the year. Although temperatures may be a lot warmer in Florida compared to where you live, you will want to bring an extra sweatshirt or jacket as you will more than likely need them. For particularly cold days, I love to bring hand or feet warmers with me into the parks which normally last all day and feel great especially when your hands get cold. Another factor to consider for January's forecast is potential rain. The last few years we have seen rainier winters which can feel unpleasant especially combined with colder temperatures. Even this year's Walt Disney World Marathon weekend was affected by the rainy weather, and the half marathon course was modified and shortened. In addition to warm weather clothing, we recommend purchasing ponchos, an extra pair of shoes, and multiple pairs of socks to avoid being rained on in January.
Despite the colder temperatures, I enjoy park days in Florida's wintertime because it is not as hot and I can enjoy warm food and drinks that I otherwise can't enjoy throughout most of the year. However, for guests not local to Florida, January can seem unpleasant especially when not adequately prepared.
February
Average High: 75 degrees
Average Low: 54 degrees
Average Precipitation: 2.47 inches
February is another colder month, however, Florida will start to see warmer days as well. For example, in February 2023 we saw 16 days reach over 80 degrees as the high (including at the beginning of the month). Combined with Florida's humidity, 80 degrees can feel a lot hotter than other regions! Therefore, I would bring lots of light layers when packing for a February vacation. February can be a beautiful month to visit the parks if you time it correctly, and usually, there is less rain than other months of the year.
The only potential downside of visiting Disney World in either January or February is potential ride closures, as many as closed in these months for refurbishment. To avoid missing your favorite attractions due to refurbishment, check out our Disney World refurbishment calendar. Otherwise, crowds tend to be lower during these months and can be a great option for your family to visit if your schedule allows.
March
Average High: 79 degrees
Average Low: 57 degrees
Average Precipitation: 3.77 inches
March is when central Florida and Disney World start to see the temperatures starting to rise but are also not unbearable such as some summer days in Florida. While most of the days will be warm enough for shorts and t-shirts, you may want to bring a light jacket, sweatshirt, or spirit jersey in case temperatures drop slightly. Additionally, Disney World tends to really blast the air conditioning in the gift shops, indoor rides, and restaurants when the temperatures start to rise so you may want to bring a warmer layer with you into the parks. Lastly, although the summer rainstorms are not in full swing yet, March still may be a bit rainy, so I would pack at least one extra poncho.
Overall, the weather in March can make this month one of the best times to visit Disney World. However, usually, crowds begin to rise this month due to spring break, so be sure to be prepared for larger lines and crowds throughout Disney property.
April
Average High: 84 degrees
Average Low: 63 degrees
Average Precipitation: 2.68 inches
April may be one of the nicest months of the year in central Florida, however unfortunately the parks are typically the most crowded during April. Clothing wise, you are usually safe with shorts and a t-shirt during April, with the potential of needing a light sweatshirt or poncho for an afternoon rain shower. Spring break is usually in the last two weeks of this month and can make visiting the parks expensive due to heightened ticket and hotel prices. Trips in April can also be frustrating due to the very large crowds which many families have trouble tolerating.
However, if you plan accordingly with dinner reservations and purchase Genie+ you can absolutely still enjoy your days at the theme parks. Personally, I love having a chill night at EPCOT in April during the Flower and Garden Festival exploring the booths and enjoying the beautiful weather. I would recommend arriving at your chosen theme park early (as some may reach capacity and Genie+ may sell out) if you tend to experience as many attractions as possible. Otherwise, simply enjoy the weather and make the best of your Disney World vacation.
May
Average High: 88 degrees
Average Low: 69 degrees
Average Precipitation: 3.45 inches
May begins the start of the high heat and humidity in central Florida. Sweatshirts and long sleeves are no longer needed during this month. In fact, we highly recommend breaking out those sweat-wicking t-shirts, portable fans, and cooling towels starting in May. Not only do temperatures rise, but the humidity does as well. Although May can be more tolerable than June through September, it will still be hot, and you will definitely be able to enjoy the pool or water parks if you are interested.
Despite the rising temperatures, May is still a great month to visit Disney, and you may even see lower crowd levels, especially before Memorial Day weekend. Usually families don't like to take their kids out of school between spring and summer break. Therefore, if you are able, early May can be a great time to visit for both nice weather and lower crowds.
June
Average High: 91 degrees
Average Low: 74 degrees
Average Precipitation: 7.58 inches
June begins the extreme hot and humid temperatures within the summer months as well as hurricane season. While usually Florida doesn't see hurricanes until later in the summer, you should still be prepared for frequent rainstorms in June, especially in the afternoon. June also kicks off most school's summer breaks, so be prepared for higher crowds consisting of families enjoying their summer vacations.
Despite the heat and rain, June can be a good month to visit as the peak of summer hasn't started yet and you are still able to take advantage of all of Disney World's rides, restaurants, festivals, and other events without having to worry too much about the weather. The biggest downside would be the start of the many families taking their kids on summer break during this month, so crowds may be a bit higher.
July
Average High: 92 degrees
Average Low: 75 degrees
Average Precipitation: 7.27 inches
I would say July is the first month of the summer where you will want to take the summer heat very seriously. Per our recommendations above, we advise to take frequent breaks, apply and reapply sunscreen, hydrate, and wear cool clothing. The average low for July is 75 degrees which is still very warm, especially as the average low temperature.
Pool days and water parks are great options during July vacations, but be sure to be aware of heat exhaustion and dehydration during this month. Crowds are typically fairly high during this month as well due to summer vacations and breaks from school, however, it is definitely doable, especially with proper planning and integrated breaks to escape the heat.
August
Average High: 91 degrees
Average Low: 75 degrees
Average Precipitation: 7.13 inches
August is when Florida will likely see its first hurricane or strong tropical storm, neither of which should be taken lightly. If you are flying into Orlando or are not visiting from local areas, be sure to keep an eye on the forecast the week leading up to your trip in case you need to reschedule anything. As previously stated, Disney World is usually great with rearranging vacations, especially during hurricane season. Either way, definitely be prepared to see at least one strong rainstorm during your trip. Bring ponchos with you at all times, you won't regret it!
Despite the extreme weather, August is one of my favorite months to visit Disney World due to the start of both Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party. Another one of my favorite festivals, the International Food and Wine Festival at EPCOT, is also in full swing in August, so you are able to do both within the same trip. It's always fun to get to experience two major special events during one trip! Just be sure to plan accordingly with heat-resistant clothing and ponchos.
September
Average High: 89 degrees
Average Low: 74 degrees
Average Precipitation: 6.06 inches
September is usually the start of lower crowds due to kids returning to school, however, it is still very hot, humid, and rainy during this time. We have seen several hurricanes come through Florida in September, so trip insurance may be worth the extra expense if you plan on visiting Disney World in September.
Despite the extreme weather, September is another good month to visit Disney World due to the likely smaller crowds. Before moving to Florida, my family frequently planned our annual Disney World trip the week of Labor Day to avoid having to take multiple vacation days but still experience smaller crowds. You can also experience the start of Halloween season at Disney World which is always a great experience.
October
Average High: 85 degrees
Average Low: 68 degrees
Average Precipitation: 3.31 inches
Although rainfall typically starts to decrease in October, Florida is still technically in their hurricane season so be sure to be prepared for potential rainstorms with ponchos and other appropriate clothing. October is a great time to visit Disney World especially to get the full effect of the Halloween décor throughout Disney World property. However, it is still very warm and humid during this month, unlike most regions that start to see cooler temperatures.
I personally spend a lot of time at the parks during October to make sure I get to try all the special food, treats, and decorations during the Halloween season. As you can see with the average temperatures, October is still a warm month for Florida. Be sure to dress appropriately with light layers and comfortable clothing for the heat.
November
Average High: 78 degrees
Average Low: 59 degrees
Average Precipitation: 2.17 inches
November is one of the best months to visit Disney World solely based on the weather. Similar to April, the temperatures start to become very pleasant, and the heat starts to become much more bearable during this month. However, be prepared for a couple of hot days in November as temperatures have been seen to rise and fall within just a few days. Additionally, although rain is always a factor in Florida, it is less likely you will get stuck in a rainstorm in November as hurricane season wraps up during this month.
The first couple weeks of November and the week immediately following Thanksgiving are always great times to visit given the pleasant weather and lower crowds. Although it still may be fairly warm, rainstorms and extreme heat are less likely in November.
December
Average High: 75 degrees
Average Low: 55 degrees
Average Precipitation: 2.58 inches
As you probably can guess, December is a very popular time for Disney World due to the incredible Christmas decorations both in the theme parks and throughout Disney World property. Disney World even has incredible gingerbread houses you can find at all of the Disney World resorts- an activity that we highly recommend if you are visiting during the holiday season. Despite the higher crowds, December is a great time to visit Florida for the weather, especially if you want to stay away from the heat.
Although it is less likely you will get to enjoy the resort pool or water parks in December, walking around the theme parks will be much more bearable in the cooler temperatures. We recommend bringing at least one extra sweatshirt, hat, or maybe even hand warmers if you are visiting Disney World in December. Especially during the evening hours, temperatures can drop drastically, even if they are hot during the day. Additionally, similar to January, Florida has been experiencing abnormally rainy winters, so be sure to bring at least one extra poncho in case it rains.
Best Months to Visit Disney World Based on Weather
There are many things to consider when choosing which months to visit Disney World. For a lot of families, there are only certain months out of the year when they are able to visit, even if they'd prefer other months due to the family's schedules.
Based on weather alone, and not considering potential crowd levels, the best months to visit Disney World are February, March, and April. During these months, it is warm yet not too warm especially compared to Florida summers. Guests are able to walk around the theme parks all day without getting heat exhaustion, however, it is still warm enough to enjoy the Florida sun as well as the resort pool and water parks. I often hear guests say they enjoy visiting Disney World during these months because they can still escape the winter time in their home states but also do not have to deal with the extreme heat and humidity Florida often experiences.
November and December also often have similar “warm but not too warm” temperatures and can be very enjoyable to visit to see the holiday decorations and events. However, the weeks immediately surrounding Christmas and Thanksgiving can be extremely crowded. We recommend visiting earlier in these months before the holiday to enjoy nice temperatures and lower crowds. It's also usually more expensive to take your Disney World vacations during the holidays.
Even if you visit Disney World during the hottest or rainiest times of the year, there are still many ways to be prepared and enjoy the parks. As a regular Disney World visitor and annual passholder, my days at the parks typically vary depending on the weather. Usually during the winter and spring months, I can spend more time in the parks from open to close. During the summer, I usually avoid the parks during the afternoon heat and rainstorms and focus on enjoying the parks at night when it is slightly cooler. I always make sure to hydrate and take breaks as often as needed during hot park days. Regardless of the weather, I always have an amazing time especially when I prepare for the unpredictable weather in Florida.

Frequently Asked Questions
The best months to visit Disney World are February, March, and April. Usually the temperatures are very pleasant during these months. Temperatures are warm, but not too warm especially compared to Florida summers. You will likely not be too hot to walk around the theme parks all day, however it will be warm enough to swim and bask in some sun unlike most states across the country. Just keep in mind the busier weeks due to spring break and other holidays, which can make the park days more stressful with higher crowds. Although January is the coldest month in Florida, usually crowds are lower, and you can still enjoy parks with proper attire and planning.
If it rains at Disney World, most of the theme park's attractions and special events will still operate as normal. However, some of the outdoor rides and nighttime shows may be canceled, especially if there is lightning and makes it unsafe for the cast members and performers. Disney World may also close the parks if there is a hurricane or other dangerous tropical storm that makes it unsafe for guests and staff. Rainstorms happen almost everyday in Florida summers, so it is highly recommended to bring ponchos and wear clothing that will not be too uncomfortable if it rains.
The coldest months at Disney World are January and February, with highs average around the low 70s and lows averaging around the high 40s. Lately, Disney World has also been seeing more rain in these months which can make it feel even colder. However, these months typically see the lowest crowds and may still be a great option to visit, especially if you do not need to prioritize going to the pool or water parks.
