If you are someone who loves Disney and is often the go-to resource for all your friends and family on Disney vacations, then becoming a Disney travel agent may be the best job for you! Disney travel agents often get perks like working towards credit for a Disney vacation which is a large appeal of the job. To be a Disney travel agent, you need to be well-versed in all the news and recent updates of Disney Parks travel. If you're someone who already stays on top of the recent Disney news, it might make sense to pursue a job helping guests plan Disney trips!

As a Disney travel agent myself, I’d love to give you an inside look at what the job entails and how you can become an agent yourself. I have first-hand experience on what being a Disney travel agent is like, how I prepared for the job, and tips on how to succeed in this magical line of work.

What It’s Like Being a Disney Travel Agent

First off, let’s talk about what it’s like being a Disney travel agent. I can simplify it down to one word: rewarding. When you have clients that have a wonderful time on their vacation and you know that you were there to help them plan and assist with that trip, you can’t help but feel some of that magic back at home as well. You’ll be reminded again and again why you love Disney vacations so much and why you love helping others experience those trips as well.

On the professional side of that answer, you’ll be caring for your client’s vacation and any additional needs they may have that go along with it. Basically, you’ll be doing everything that you’ve become comfortable with doing for your own vacations, but for someone else!

You’ll put together and send out quotes, book sailings, and resorts, purchase theme park tickets and special event tickets, make dining reservations, book Enchanting Extras, and be there to provide your client with information and make sure that they are completely comfortable and understanding of their upcoming vacation.

Is Disney Travel Agent the Right Job for Me?

Having a passion for Disney and Disney travel is key for a job like this. When you go on your own Disney vacation, do you feel the magic of Disney all around you? Does a specific Disney destination feel like home to you? If you’re considering becoming a Disney travel agent, you should be someone who feels that Disney magic and understands the importance of pixie dust. Those are the feelings that you’re going to strive to have your clients experience. You know you've done your job right if your clients return home and feel that during their time on vacation.

Even though a love for Disney is important, it does take more than that in order to be a successful agent. It takes first-hand knowledge of these destinations. Experience is VERY important. The more you know and have personally experienced, the better agent you’ll be! For many of your clients, this will be their first, and possibly only Disney vacation. It’s important that your information is accurate and helpful in order to provide the best trip possible.

If your goal is simply to book trips, you’re probably in the wrong place. The job of a Disney travel agent is to create magical vacations for Guests. This is achieved by removing the stress of vacationing. When I plan a trip for a client, I make sure that I’m the one taking care of all of the work and tasks so the only thing that they need to focus on is having a good time.

Disney Travel Agent Skill Sets

Different agencies may ask for or require specific skills, but the biggest skill this job requires is organization. You’ll need to be able to keep track of your different clients, their needs, trips, important dates, and more. Once you’re an established travel agent, you’ll often be working with many clients and on many trips at the same time. It’s important that you keep all of that information separate and organized.

You’ll be working with the public, so people skills are very helpful. Communication with leads and clients can happen in person, over the phone, online, or even through virtual meetings. It’s important to keep an upbeat and happy tone through every source of communication. Always make your clients and their needs a priority. Respond to them quickly and efficiently and make sure you’re providing them with the best service possible.

Of course, you’ll also want to be familiar with the booking and reservation processes of Disney. But again, you should be more than comfortable with these tasks based on your own previous experiences and your own Disney vacations.

Reasons to Become a Disney Travel Agent

You have the experience, you have the knowledge, people already come to you for help…Why not do this as a job? The Disney planning skills that you have are valuable. Take them and make a job out of it! It’s the perfect opportunity to do what you love and benefit from it.

As a mom to two young children, a big perk of this job for me is that I can do it from home! I found a job that involves Disney, something that I’m knowledgeable about and good at, and I can do it from home. It made perfect sense to me and was almost too good to be true!

Another benefit that you’ll see once you become an established agent is travel agent discounts. This includes travel agent rates on rental cars, flights, and even Disney discounts! Savings include theme park tickets, Disney Resort hotels, and cruises! You’ll be helping others plan magical Disney vacations and saving on your own Disney vacations. What could be better than that?

Depending on the agency you work for you may be able to apply your work as a Disney travel agent towards redeeming your own Disney vacations. For some Disney travel agents, this is the whole reason to pursue this career! You can be working off your own Disney vacations as you help others plan.

How to Become a Disney Travel Agent

Now that we’ve looked at different aspects of being a Disney travel agent, let’s get back to the original question. How do you become a Disney travel agent? Here are the steps that I personally took when I decided that I wanted to help plan magical Disney vacations for others.

Firstly, you need to find a travel agency that’s right for you. Take time to think about what you’re looking for in an agency as well as what you’d like to do. There are a few agencies that ONLY book Disney destinations. You’ll also find others that mainly book Disney, but work with other destinations as well. Take time to explore their websites and social media accounts. Look at their current team of agents and read their personal bios. Become as familiar and comfortable as you possibly can with the agency before applying. Remember, you want to provide the best service as an agent. So make sure that you find an agency that backs that and will support you as well.

We always recommend Get Away Today for all of your Disney vacation planning needs. When looking for an agency to work for, we would first and foremost suggest keeping an eye on their Careers Page for open opportunities! For years, they have provided Guests with superior service and expertise, and truly believe they would be a great agency fit for anyone who is interested in becoming an agent.

After being hired, my next step was to complete training courses on the official Disney Travel Agent website. This set of courses is called the College of Disney Knowledge. I was provided detailed information to read about Disneyland, Walt Disney World, Disney Cruise Line, Aulani (a Disney Resort & Spa in Hawaii), and Adventures by Disney. After I completed the reading on each topic, I was quizzed to test my knowledge of each destination. Once I finished the courses and passed all of the tests, I was officially a Disney travel agent.

What Happens Now?

You’ve found a travel agency, you’ve been hired, and are now a Disney travel agent… What happens now? Now you have to put in the work to build clientele! This step can be slow going at first, but it’s important to work hard and keep going.

Most of your clients will come from word of mouth and recommendations. If things go slow at first, keep your head up! Once you start booking clients, they’ll start telling others about you and the great services that you offer and your clientele will eventually build up!

Marketing is important to get your name out there. You can utilize physical forms of marketing such as business cards, brochures, and informational pamphlets. Consider setting up a booth at community events, donating to raffles, or becoming a sponsor for a sports team or musical. Another GREAT way to get your name out there is through social media. Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok are all great ways to show your experience, and knowledge, and to promote your services.

Another thing you’ll want to use social media for is to keep up with the latest Disney destination news, announcements, and updates. Disney keeps their social media accounts very up-to-date with news about things to come, attractions, snacks, merchandise, shows, theme parks, cruise lines, and so much more! It’s important that you keep up with all of the information that they put out. It’s then equally important to share that information on your social media to let your audience know that you stay up to date with everything going on at Disney.

You can also keep up to date with the latest Disney news by subscribing (for free!) to the Mickey Visit Newsletter. Not only will you get breaking Disney news delivered directly to you, but you’ll also receive exclusive discounts and planning tips!
