18 Popular Disney World Rides That Visitors Surprisingly Avoid

It may come as a surprise that some of the most popular rides at Walt Disney World are often skipped over by many Guests. Even though these rides frequently boast long wait times and are clearly some of the most sought after experiences, their appeal does not reach every Guest in attendance. One of the best things about Disney World is that there are many different types of rides. From racing roller coasters, to slow dark rides, fun game-style rides, and more, there’s something for every Guest to enjoy. That being said, not every Guest enjoys the same type of ride. They may find certain rides to be scary, nauseating, painful, or simply not worth their time. In this article, I’m going to discuss which popular Disney rides are often avoided by Guests and why. Even though these rides are considered some of the best at Walt Disney World, certain aspects of these rides are major deal breakers for some Guests. Let’s take a look and see what causes  Guests to shy away from these fan-favorites Disney World rides.

Space Mountain

Space Mountain Space Mountain is a dark indoor roller coaster that gives Guests the feeling that they are traveling through space. After initial take off, the coaster makes a steep ascent higher into space. Surrounded by views of stars, meteorites, and other galaxies, you can’t help but feel the excitement of the space travel that’s about to come. However, once the coaster reaches the top of the track, it’s time to make the descent back down to earth. This is where this ride gets hairy for some Guests. As you speed downwards, you will experience many twists, turns, bumps, sudden jerks, and whiplash motions. For many Guests, this experience is very unenjoyable and often even painful, leaving them with sore backs, cricks in the neck, and a general stoved up feeling. Another complaint that you may hear from the taller crowd is in regard to the track. While the coaster is indoors and surrounded by darkness, you still get a glimpse of the track as you race through the bars and beams that are supporting the structure. This can be very unnerving for taller Guests as it sometimes feels as though you’re going to clonk your head on one of these pieces at any given moment.

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train queue Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is another roller coaster that’s located in Magic Kingdom. However, in regard to the ride itself, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is exceptionally smooth and enjoyable. Even young children are able to climb aboard a train and take a journey through the mines. Don’t let its smooth nature fool you though! Even though this coaster isn’t rough, it’s still very thrilling! This is a big reason why this ride is so popular. That being said, the popularity of this ride is often what deters Guests from it. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train often has very long wait times that start early in the morning and last throughout the entirety of the day. To experience this ride, you have one of two options – wait in a long line or purchase a Lightning Lane Single Pass. While Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is a great ride, some may say that it doesn’t warrant standing in an extremely long line or paying for each member of your party to skip the line.

TRON Lightcycle / Run

TRON Lightcycle / Run READ MORE – Disney’s Other Star Wars Bar Sells a $5,000 Cocktail and Actually Feels Like You’re in Space TRON Lightcycle / Run is the newest roller coaster at Magic Kingdom. Taking place partially indoors and partially outdoors, when you ride this ride, you experience what it’s like to enter the Grid. For this ride, Guests climb aboard their very own Lightcycle and take part in a high-energy race. TRON is an extremely fun and thrilling ride. It earned the title of one of the fastest rides of any Disney theme park in the world. Even though this ride is extremely popular, there are some Guests who choose not to ride it. Of course, those who don’t enjoy roller coasters and fast rides won’t enjoy TRON. However, even those who do enjoy such rides sometimes skip this ride. When it comes to TRON, there are two things that often deter Guests – the ride vehicle and the length of the ride.

Why Guests Avoid TRON Lightcycle / Run

Tron Lightcycle / Run ride vehicles As I previously mentioned, when you ride TRON, you ride on a Lightcycle. The ride vehicles are in a shape that’s similar to that of a motorcycle. Guests will straddle the vehicle, grab the handle bars, and lean forward, resting their chest and stomach on the vehicle. On top of that odd position, the vehicle secures against your back and your calves, which some Guests don’t like and others have an issue fitting into. Another reason Guests choose not to enjoy a ride on TRON Lightcycle / Run is because of the length of the ride.  The ride itself only lasts about 2 minutes. While it’s an exhilarating ride, it's extremely short and Guests often don’t think that it’s worth waiting in a long line or paying for a Lightning Lane Single Pass. Previously, you could experience TRON Lightcycle / Run by joining a virtual queue. This option was much more ideal since you didn’t have to pay for each member of your party to ride the ride or wait in an extremely long line. Unfortunately, now Guests are only able to access TRON through a regular Standby Line or with a Lightning Lane Single Pass.

Peter Pan's Flight

Peter Pan's Flight Peter Pan’s Flight is a charming, quintessential Disney dark ride. This slow moving, family-friendly ride whisks Guests off to Neverland and follows along with the story of Peter Pan. Ever since this ride opened at Disney World in 1971, it has been very popular among Guests. It’s rare that you’ll see this attraction with a short wait time. The downside to this ride is its popularity. Similar to some of the other attractions that we’ve discussed, the issue that Guests have with this ride is that they may not necessarily think that it’s worth such a long wait time. It’s not thrilling by any means and only lasts about 2 minutes. Peter Pan’s Flight is a classic, but Guests often skip it if they aren’t able to secure a Lightning Lane Multi Pass for it.

Mad Tea Party

Mad Tea Party Mad Tea Party encompasses the chaotic interaction that Alice has with The Mad Hatter, The March Hare, and The Dormouse during their notorious tea party. During this ride, you’ll sit in a giant teacup and be spun around for 1.5 minutes straight. All of the teacups spin naturally as the ride moves. However, your spinning motion can be amplified by rotating the turntable in the center of your teacup. Guests who are prone to motion sickness avoid this ride at all costs. And for good reason! This ride can even turn the stomachs of those who don’t generally feel the effects of motion sickness.

Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin

Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin On the note of spinning, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is another ride that Guests who are subject to motion sickness tend to skip. After all, the ride even has the word “spin” in its name. During Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, you’ll put your skills to the test as you attempt to defeat the Evil Emperor Zurg. On this shooter-style ride, your goal is to hit as many Z targets as possible and come out with the highest score. This ride does not have to be nauseating since your ride vehicle doesn’t naturally spin. It can, however, become extremely sickening depending on how much spinning those in the car decide to do. In each ride vehicle, there is a lever that allows the car to spin to the left or to the right. You can go from side to side and in complete circles. If you’re riding by yourself or if you trust the person that you’re riding with not to spin you, this ride can be extremely enjoyable. However, if you’re prone to motion sickness and the other person riding with you continuously spins the vehicle, you’ll most likely regret getting on this ride.

Spinner Rides – Astro Orbiter, Dumbo the Flying Elephant, The Magic Carpets of Aladdin

Dumbo the Flying Elephant When it comes to spinner rides, Magic Kingdom does not hold back. Besides Mad Tea Party and Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, there are three classic spinner rides. These include Dumbo the Flying Elephant, The Magic Carpets of Aladdin, and Astro Orbiter. Unlike Mad Tea Party and Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, the individual ride vehicles of these rides do not spin. Rather, the ride vehicles rotate in a continuous circular motion in a single file line. In regard to spinning, these are less intense than the rides where the vehicle spins individually. However, the continuous circular motion can bother those who are easily nauseated. On Dumbo the Flying Elephant, The Magic Carpets of Aladdin, and Astro Orbiter, you can also choose to levitate your vehicle with the freedom to go up and down. This motion on top of the circular rotation is often what pushes Guests to the level of nauseousness.

Soarin' Around the World

Soarin' Soarin’ gives Guests a true feeling of soaring around the world. This simulator ride allows Guests to experience what it’s like to go hang gliding. Some Guests find this ride extremely calming and relaxing. However, for others, it can be a terrible experience. Soarin’ is EXTREMELY realistic. Those who are afraid of heights often don’t do well on this ride. Even though you’re only levitated off the ground 30-50 feet, depending on which row you’re in, you truly feel like you’re gliding through the air and it can be very scary for some. The swaying feeling of the hang glider can also be nauseating for some Guests. While this ride isn’t commonly known for motion sickness, those who are easily woozy may be better off skipping it.

Mission: SPACE

Mission: SPACE Mission: SPACE is without a doubt the worst ride at Walt Disney World when it comes to motion sickness. Many Guests (myself included) heavily avoid this ride. The idea behind the ride is simple enough. It’s a ride that simulates what it feels like to travel through space in a spaceship. Disney Imagineers worked closely with NASA during the creation of this ride to make it as life-like as possible. The problem is, we’re not all equipped to experience what astronauts feel when they go to space. There are two different levels of this ride – the Green Mission and Orange Mission. If you're adamant about riding Mission: SPACE, the Green Mission is the gentler version. This mission only uses a motion simulator and does not spin. The Orange Mission, however,  is much more intense. With the use of a centrifuge, Guests are spun and tilted in order to get a simulated feel of the speed and G-forces that are felt on an actual spacecraft. Disney is very aware that Mission: SPACE is an extremely nauseating ride. It’s actually the only ride on property that comes equipped with barf bags.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is an extremely unique indoor roller coaster. With a backwards launch, large screen visuals, an exciting soundtrack, and 360° motion, this ride puts you right in the middle of the action as you help the Guardians save the galaxy. This roller coaster is one of the most popular rides at EPCOT and all of Walt Disney World. Unfortunately, a number of the aspects that make this ride special also causes Guests to bypass this ride. As I previously mentioned, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is a roller coaster that rotates 360° in order to give Guests a full and complete experience. Such a motion is possible due to the omnicoaster ride vehicles that are used. Luckily, the vehicles are not freely spinning during the ride. Rather, they are programmed to spin at specific locations and moments during the ride. Even so, Guests who are prone to motion sickness may have troubles due to the spinning. Another portion of the ride that may nauseate Guests is the backwards launch. The launch itself hits speeds close to 50 mph. The quick backwards motion can sometimes make Guests queasy. Overall, considering the motion and speed of the coaster, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is extremely smooth. However, if you’re easily bothered by motion, I would approach this ride with caution.

Star Tours – The Adventures Continue

Star Tours AT-AT walker You’ll be put right in the middle of exciting Star Wars action on Star Tours – The Adventures Continue. On this 3D motion simulator ride, you’ll take a journey onboard a Starspeeder 1000, visiting well-known Star Wars locations, interacting with popular characters, and experiencing your own special adventure in a galaxy far, far away. By intertwining a large variety of different scenes, you’ll have the opportunity to experience more than 250 different Star Wars storylines. The motion simulation is the reason why Guests often skip this ride. While not as intense as Mission: SPACE, Star Tours can be pretty sickening. You’ll feel the sensations of jumping into lightspeed, plummeting downwards, dodging enemy attacks, and more during your time in the Starspeeder. Luckily, if you choose to pass on this ride, there are plenty of other Star Wars experiences to be had on Batuu in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror When you “drop in” to The Hollywood Tower Hotel, you’ll find that you’ve crossed over into The Twilight Zone. This journey will land you in a service elevator that seemingly free falls from a 13-story height. Guests that avoid this ride often do so out of the fear of heights and falling. While it’s understandably hard to get past this fear, Guests can rest assured that you aren’t actually freely falling during your ride on The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. The drop sequences, while randomized, are completely controlled. Rather than simply dropping, the elevator is actually being pulled both up and down (at speeds faster than gravity!). To help ease any fears, this ride is not just an elevator-style ride that was designed by Disney Imagineers. An actual elevator company, the Otis Elevator Company, worked closely with Disney during the creation of this ride. For those who can brave the scary factors, motion sickness may get the best of them. If the feeling of falling makes your stomach weak, it would be best if you avoided this ride.

Alien Swirling Saucers

Alien Swirling Saucers Alien Swirling Saucers is a family-friendly ride in Toy Story Land that features the Little Green Men from Pizza Planet. This whip ride pulls Guests in a circular motion while their ride vehicles simultaneously swing side to side. If you’ve ever visited Disneyland, this ride is exactly the same as Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree in Cars Land. While this ride is welcoming to Guests of all ages, it does indeed have a little whip to it. The circular motions and the sudden whip sensation that are experienced throughout the ride often result in motion sickness for Guests who can’t handle such movements.

DINOSAUR

DINOSAUR DINOSAUR takes Guests on a prehistoric mission to rescue an Iguanodon before it faces extinction. A Time Rover serves as your ride vehicle for this ride. Even though the Time Rovers have a bulky Jeep-like build to them, they are no match for the rough terrain that you pass through during this ride. The DINOSAUR ride experience is extremely rough and jerky. While motion sickness is possible, for this ride, Guests more often experience pain and body aches from the sudden, jarring movements. Guests with small children often pass on this ride too due to its frightening elements. DINOSAUR is very stimulating and includes loud sounds, large dinosaur animatronics, and a frantic car ride. If your little one is easily startled or frightened, it would be a good idea to pass on this ride until they feel more comfortable.

TriceraTop Spin

TriceraTop Spin While Magic Kingdom easily has the most spinner rides out of all of Walt Disney World, Animal Kingdom has one as well! TriceraTop Spin is a classic spinner ride that copies the exact style of Dumbo the Flying Elephant, Astro Orbiter, and The Magic Carpets of Aladdin. Again, this style ride will take you in a continuous rotation while also having the ability to rise up and down. Even though these motions aren’t intense, they may nauseate those who are prone to motion sickness.

Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain

Expedition Everest Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain is a roller coaster that takes Guests on a thrilling adventure through Himalayan mountain peaks. Successfully scaling the mountain is the least of Guests worries when they realize there’s a ferocious Yeti in their presence. Things start to get scary when you reach the top of the mountain and realize that the Yeti has torn apart the track that your train is supposed to be traveling on. When there’s no option to go forward, the only choice is to go backwards. The roller coaster plummets backwards into darkness and continues a backwards motion for quite a few seconds before returning to a forward facing motion. The backwards motion is enough to create a woozy feeling for some Guests. However, it seems that the back and forth motion of going forward, backward, and then forward again is what really does Guests in that are prone to motion sickness. My mother got an instant migraine after riding Expedition Everest and was miserable for a good portion of the day. If you generally don’t do well with back and forth motions, you’ll most likely want to skip this ride. If you have young children who are easily frightened, you may also want to consider skipping this ride. The overall experience of this coaster paired with the loud sounds and visual effects that are used for the Yeti may be too much for little ones.
