Walt Disney World‘s original theme park, Magic Kingdom, is in the middle of the biggest expansion in its 55-year history. As we’ll see in this article, “big” takes on multiple meanings here. Yes, the square footage of the project is huge, taking up a piece of real estate that formerly belonged to a classic area of the park and simultaneously expanding the park’s footprint into undeveloped property. However, something not as commonly discussed until now is the bigness of the project’s height. Its new landmarks will stand tall, and Walt Disney Imagineers are in the process of assessing how that will affect the rest of the park.

New Rides Coming to Magic Kingdom
Guests visiting Magic Kingdom are currently greeted by a long line of construction walls that stretch from just outside the Haunted Mansion all the way to near the entrance of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, tracing the entire Frontierland thoroughfare in between.
What looks like a seemingly endless valley of dirt today will one day be home to two huge new areas of Magic Kingdom: Piston Peak National Park and Villains Land.

Set within the world of Pixar’s Cars, Piston Peak will salute the natural beauty of U.S. national parks with two new rides. Cars Ridge Run Rally will be a thrill ride mimicking the feeling of off-roading through mountainous terrain. Miss Fritter’s Daredevil Spin-Along will be a smaller-scale, family-friendly spinning ride starring the demolition derby school bus from Cars 3.
Villains Land will be dedicated to the classic antagonists of Walt Disney Animation Studios films. The land will include two rides, one being a Maleficent roller coaster, taking place at the dark fairy’s evil fortress, pictured above as a scale model. The other will be a dark ride in which the Magic Mirror from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs takes us on a journey through the “Mirror Realm” and “conjures visions of your favorite Villains,” including Cruella De Vil, Ursula, Jafar, Scar, and Doctor Facilier.

Villains Land and Piston Peak Will Be Visible from All Over the Park
As Imagineers build new attractions from the ground up, an important step in their process is something called a balloon test. During this procedure, Imagineers tether a large balloon to the ground and raise it to the intended height of the building they’re constructing. This allows Imagineers to see how the new building will affect sight lines around the rest of the park. Will the new structure be visible from other areas, and if so, does that adhere to the story or contradict it? If it contradicts, is that okay, or does something need to pivot, whether in the height of the structure or its aesthetic design?
Disney Imagineers recently performed balloon tests for Piston Peak National Park and Villains Land, raising balloons before Magic Kingdom opened to guests and assessing where those balloons were visible from across the park. It’s a team effort, with Imagineers scattered across the park and capturing photos of where the balloons can be seen, and not seen, from all over.
In the collage above, the red balloon indicates the mountain of Piston Peak National Park and the blue balloon indicates a tall structure in Villains Land, likely Maleficent’s fortress.
“It’s important to us that this fits into the skyline of the Magic Kingdom, so from any angle, this looks perfect,” said Chelsea Whikehart, Walt Disney Imagineering Senior Producer working on Piston Peak, in a video published on the Imagineering YouTube channel. She continued, “We did this same balloon test a year ago, and we realized some of our elevations were a little too high. We’ve gone back. We’ve looked at our designs. When we reevaluated this balloon test, we realized we were right on the money.”
This change can be seen in the differences between the 2024 and 2026 versions of concept art. The 2024 version, above, shows the mountain rising high into the air. The 2026 version, below, still has a huge mountain, but the rock formation of the previous highest point has been relocated.
Sight lines are a hot topic in the theme park fan community. Some guests don’t mind being able to see another ride or structure from across the park. Others think everything should match an area’s visual identity.
Balloon tests are a multifaceted operation as the Piston Peak teams align with the Villains Land teams. “We’re really excited to see how these two lands pair together,” said Whikehart, “because some of their scale needs to directly relate to our scale, which directly relates to Big Thunder Mountain, which directly relates to the Haunted Mansion and beyond.”
To get an idea of how tall the Piston Peak mountain will seem at its base, above is a look at the balloon from the construction site itself. To get your bearings, in the background is the existing Frontierland promenade, with The Diamond Horseshoe on the left. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure would be just out of frame on the right.
Disney Imagineers are selective with where they apply the sight lines principle. For example, Disney’s Contemporary Resort is visible from Liberty Square, despite those entities’ themes being nearly opposite each other. On the other hand, when Disney built Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, the hot-air balloon atop Muppet*Vision 3D was dismantled because it would have been visible from inside Galaxy’s Edge, and therefore shatter the illusion of being on a far-off planet.
