Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World has a reputation as a haven of family entertainment, but many of its new additions in recent years contain thrilling elements geared towards older kids and adults. A new attraction under construction will once again turn the attention toward families with young children.
Disney revealed Magic Kingdom’s first family-friendly new ride in over 14 years that will come to the park as part of a massive expansion. We were there when Imagineers unveiled the attraction at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, Disney’s official convention. Family-Friendly Cars Ride Coming to Magic Kingdom
While families visiting Magic Kingdom with young kids undoubtedly enjoy the classics like “it’s a small world” and Peter Pan’s Flight, they’ll also likely be happy to hear there will soon be a new Magic Kingdom ride created with children in mind.

Two new rides set in the world of Pixar’s Cars are coming to Magic Kingdom. The attractions will be part of Piston Peak National Park, a massive new area in Frontierland that replaces portions of what were formerly Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America.
One of the attractions will be a thrill ride mimicking the feeling of off-roading. Disney had previously shared that a family-friendly ride would be part of Piston Peak but hadn’t specified any details about it until now. Imagineers unveiled the news during a press preview of the Imagineering: Horizons pavilion on the D23 Show Floor in Anaheim, California.
On the D23 Show Floor, we saw the Piston Peak scale model that will be displayed all weekend for D23 attendees. The model includes a look at the family-friendly attraction. It will be an outdoor ride starring Miss Fritter, the demolition derby school bus from Cars 3.
This will be the first new ride geared toward young kids to open at Magic Kingdom since 2012, when Under the Sea ~ Journey of the Little Mermaid opened.
Upon first glance, Magic Kingdom’s new ride might look like Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters, the “dancing cars” trackless ride in Cars Land at Disney California Adventure, but it uses a different ride system instead. The ride seems to be a near-clone of Cars Quatre Roues Rallye, or Cars Race Rally, at Disney Adventure World at Disneyland Paris. That ride features a turntable that the cars spin upon. The turntable setup will be familiar to those who have ridden Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree in Cars Land at Disney California Adventure, as well as Alien Swirling Saucers in Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, but this new Magic Kingdom ride will not have the lead tractor/alien car that pulls the ride vehicles in those attractions.
In Cars 3, Lightning McQueen and Cruz Ramirez meet Miss Fritter at the Crazy Eight demolition derby. In the movie, Miss Fritter is voiced by Lea DeLaria.

Here’s a look at recent construction progress for the overall area. It’s mostly all dirt for now, but soon a new Magic Kingdom mountain range will rise from this spot.
