One Big Thing in Disneyland News – Halloween Celebration Begins!

Mickey Pumpkin nighttime

On Friday on August 22, the Halloween celebration kicks off at Disneyland! The celebration will bring seasonal decor, ride overlays, themed foods, entertainment, and more to the resort. If you're planning a visit during this time of year, here are the key things you need to know!

Disneyland Ride Closure ALERTS, Major Changes, Secrets Revealed

Join 100,000+ Disney fans and vacation planners on free newsletter. Don't miss ESSENTIAL dates, CHANGES to park strategies, exclusive limited-time ticket, gift card, and hotel discounts.

There are over a hundred seasonal Halloween food offerings available during the celebration! This includes some fan-favorites and lots of new items. You can see our Disneyland Halloween food guide for an overview of all of the foods, plus a free PDF printable listing out where to find them. Also, make sure to check out the new Halloween popcorn buckets and other novelties coming to the resort. A good number of these novelties will be available starting in August, but some will not be available until September and October.

There will also be three seasonal character dining options starting this Friday! You can choose between Goofy's Kitchen Celebrates Halloween!, Mickey’s Autumn Adventures Breakfast/Brunch Buffet at Storytellers Cafe, or an all-new Halloween offering at Storytellers Cafe called Clarabelle’s Enchanted Halloween Dinner.

Halloween Screams fireworks

The main Halloween entertainment offering is the “Halloween Screams” nighttime spectacular at Disneyland Park. Keep in mind that this show will be extra popular on weekends because it only has fireworks Friday-Sunday, and it's projections-only on weekdays. If you want to secure reserved viewing for the show, you might consider the Disney Happiest Haunts guided tour, which includes this. There will also be four Halloween ride overlays at the parks, including Guardians of the Galaxy – Monsters After Dark, Luigi's Honkin' Haul-O-Ween, Mater's Graveyard JamBOOree, and Haunted Mansion Holiday.

Some 70th anniversary entertainment, including the “Paint the Night” parade, “World of Color Happiness!,” “Tapestry of Happiness” projections on “it's a small world,” and 70th additions to Toy Story Midway Mania! will all continue to be offered during the Halloween celebration. Other 70th anniversary entertainment offerings will temporarily pause to make way for the seasonal offerings—see more details in our separate article here.

See more of the key things you should know and the differences this year if you are visiting in August, September, or October.

What We're Thinking About This Week

  • Emily is excited for the kickoff of the Halloween celebration this week! She is especially looking forward to riding Guardians of the Galaxy – Monsters After Dark and trying the new foods (and hopefully not melting in the heat).
  • Gavin is delighted by the new Tiana pumpkin. I like small touches and changes like this that come to the holidays each year.
  • Lindsay is counting down the days until her Oogie Boogie Bash party date! Although, she's disappointed to hear the rumors that the Spooky Tree Flight may not be offered at Carthay Circle this year since it's been removed from Disney's website.

Disneyland Crowd Calendar This Week

We anticipate that crowds will be lower than normal leading up to the weekend, then there will be a rush of crowds in the initial days of the Halloween celebration. Looking ahead to next week, this spike in crowds should calm down fairly quickly for the last stretch of August.

You can see our rating of all upcoming dates in our Mickey Visit Disneyland Crowd Calendar.

New Disneyland Ride Closures This Week

Here are some of the current ride closures that are continuing into this week:

  • Radiator Springs Racers is closed for refurbishment (reopening date announced)
  • The Haunted Mansion is closed for refurbishment
  • Star Tours – The Adventures Continue is closed for refurbishment (reopening date announced)
  • Casey Jr. Circus Train is closed for refurbishment

First up, we have this fun video from Brittany (@saydisney on Instagram) highlighting some hidden details in Toontown!

We also wanted to highlight this interesting video from @disneycicerone on Instagram with a fun look back at Disneyland history and how one entrance side was favored.
