Some of Walt Disney World‘s restaurants lean into their theme so much that you can’t help but love it. Sure, there are eateries where the word “Disney” translates to quality service without an in-your-face story component. Others veer distinctly in the opposite direction. The restaurant we’re taking a look at today might do that more unashamedly than any other Disney dining location.
This restaurant is filled with creativity during every moment of diners’ time there, including the menu items and the servers. We’ll share our recent experience there and the entire menu with pricing. See also our recent breakfast buffet review. Mickey Visit brings you the latest Disney news and planning resources, including mobile ordering added to breakfast at a popular Disney restaurant and the Disney CEO’s update on Disney World expansions.

Our Meal at Magic Kingdom’s Skipper Canteen
Somehow, we have never shared a review here at Mickey Visit of Jungle Navigation Co. LTD Skipper Canteen at Magic Kingdom, more commonly referred to as just Skipper Canteen. This restaurant is my favorite sit-down meal in the park and is a perfect air-conditioned escape from the crowds and extreme heat.

The story and setting of Skipper Canteen take place within the same world as the nearby Jungle Cruise ride. Walt Disney Imagineers did an excellent job expanding the classic attraction into a dining experience. Props from the skippers’ various expeditions hang on the walls. The theming and individual rooms are fantastic.
The wait staff’s interactions with guests even maintain the same schtick as the Jungle Cruise ride operators. This means that in addition to taking your order, the cast member serving you may throw in a corny joke or seven.
For lunch at Skipper Canteen, we had a couple of different favorites from the menu and one off-menu secret item. Many of the food names have connections to the Jungle Cruise or puns in their titles.
The Jungle Green Salad is $11 and comes with hearts of palm, cucumbers, sugar snap peas, sweet peppers, house-made vinaigrette, and toasted Brazilian nuts.
We tried the Catch of the Day. It’s described as “not piranha,” which during our visit meant tuna steak. It’s $35 and is served with miso-corn purée, edamame succotash, and sesame-chili crisp.
We also ordered Nile Nellie’s Noodle Bowl. In another Junge Cruise reference, it’s described as containing “niles and niles” of rice noodles, as well as stir-fried shrimp, tamarind sauce, toasted peanuts, crispy garlic, egg, and fresh basil. It’s $35.
The secret menu item is Brazilian cheesy bread. Interestingly, this is a gluten-free item. This is a very fun Brazilian steakhouse offering that they have brought to this menu.
The Falls Family Falafel, at the top of the photo above, is named after Dr. Albert Falls, namesake of Schweizer Falls, where riders see “the backside of water” on the attraction. The falafel is $12 and made from chickpeas, garlic, onions, lemon juice, and herbs. It’s a great dish, and served with enough edamame hummus to counter the drier falafel pieces.
While we didn’t order them this visit, other popular menu items at Skipper Canteen are “Taste Like Chicken Because It Is!” fried chicken, “Hardy Har Char” siu pork, and Mess Hall duck fried rice. We have had the chicken before, and it was quite good and not too heavily fried. The picture below is “Tastes Like Chicken Because It Is!” from a previous meal of ours.
As I referenced above, Skipper Canteen is a perfect cold, even freezing, temperature to escape from the Florida heat. Be aware that you might get so cold that you wish you had a jacket and, as I did, need to pop outside to get warm up again before continuing to sit in the air conditioning.
Our server said that they have had to offer up tablecloths as blankets before for guests who are frigid. To me, that fits perfectly with the Jungle Cruise “make do with what we have out here in the jungle” spirit, not to mention the attraction’s silliness.
As a table service restaurant, reservations for Jungle Navigation Co. LTD Skipper Canteen open 60 days in advance. If you’re staying overnight at an official Disney World hotel, you can book reservations 60 days before your hotel check-in date, regardless of what day of your trip the meal will be on.
