Disney Confirms Why Its Most Popular Resort Holiday Display Was Discontinued

One of the most popular traditions at Walt Disney World during the holiday season is seeing the massive holiday decorations and displays that can be found across the theme parks and resort hotels. These are so popular that guests sometimes plan entire days or evenings on viewing them, in a practice often called “resort hopping,” using Disney World transportation to travel between the resort hotels.

In a recent update that was revealed when Disney World revealed its 2026 holiday event dates, the most popular holiday display will not be returning this year and is gone for good. We will break down what Disney has now shared, confirming why it's not coming back. Mickey Visit brings you the latest Disney news and planning resources, including the most recent rundown of the Disney World resort hotel restrictions and the new transportation rules at Disney Springs.

Disney Confirms Why Giant Gingerbread Display Is Not Returning

Disney World gingerbread house

For the holiday season, Disney World puts up multiple gingerbread displays across the Disney World Resort hotels and even in EPCOT. Each year, the most popular Disney World gingerbread display is the life-sized Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa gingerbread Victorian-style house. Creating this enormous display was a massive undertaking, but it was appreciated and beloved by many guests during the holiday season.

The display was a huge draw for guests to visit this Disney resort hotel to view the house, plus line up to purchase snacks from the stand inside it. Disney would sell a selection of holiday treats, including Grand Floridian exclusive gingerbread house ornaments, directly inside the gingerbread house.

The popular gingerbread display did not return in 2025 either due to construction taking place on the Resort hotel's lobby. However, the construction is now complete, and the result has been the new Grand Floridian Lobby birdcage-themed bar called The Perch. Many hoped this meant the gingerbread display would return this year, but Disney has confirmed that it's been permanently retired. When the news was first announced, we did not know the exact reason why, but now Disney has revealed their reasoning.

Gingerbread house line

Disney has now updated their official website, revealing why it retired this popular holiday tradition. The official wording from the website reads:

“This holiday season at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, Guests can enjoy elegant seasonal décor and festive offerings, along with new miniature gingerbread displays featured throughout the Resort. To help keep the lobby flowing smoothly for Resort Guests, the traditional large gingerbread house will not be offered this year.”

The gingerbread display was extremely popular, so it's not wrong to say that it created large crowds of locals and guests coming from other hotels to view it. Our last experience viewing the gingerbread house, we encountered a lobby that was absolutely packed with huge lines to purchase snacks from the store, and even long lines to just go up to snap a picture. So, to be fair, it's not wrong to call out how the display may have negatively impacted the lobby experience.

Additionally, with the likelihood of more Disney World Resort hotel restrictions coming soon, guests not staying at the resort would be prevented from seeing the gingerbread display without a dining reservation, which would generate frustration and complaints. A simpler fix, also influenced by the addition of The Perch Bar, is to reduce the reason for demand in the lobby altogether. Fans have already been questioning how the gingerbread display would have worked alongside the new bar, and while it may still have been possible, the space is now even more limited than before, which would likely have made crowding issues worse.

This is disappointing news for gingerbread display fans. The other gingerbread displays across the resort appear to be safe, especially the intricate displays at Disney's Contemporary Resort and Disney's Beach Club Resort, which are also among our favorites.
