Disney Hints at New Resort Hopping Restrictions and Discontinues Popular Holiday Tradition

Disney World has recently begun restricting some transportation access to Disney World Resort hotels to guests only staying at the resorts or those with valid dining restrictions. These restrictions are going to become permanent after an initial test run earlier this year.

Now, Disney World has hinted at further restrictions coming to Resort hotels, which could impact how guests access the resorts via the Disney World Monorail or Disney Skyliner. Plus, a long-time holiday tradition at one popular resort has been discontinued, which could be connected to these upcoming restrictions. Mickey Visit brings you the latest Disney news and planning resources, including an incident involving a guest falling down Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, and new Disney World discounts released.

Disney Hints at New Holiday Resort Hotel Restriction Rules

Earlier this year, Disney did a test run on restrictions on Disney Resort hotel transportation at Disney Springs. During this test run, cast members were stationed at the bus queue entrance to verify guests had an active resort or dining reservation before boarding. Now the restriction has been confirmed as a permanent operational change with signage posted at Disney Springs stating it will go into effect on June 28.

The notice states that guests boarding Disney Resort hotel buses and the Sassagoula River Cruise from Disney Springs will be asked to show a valid Disney Resort hotel room key, dining reservation, or experience reservation for the resort they are visiting, starting on June 28.

Many thought this crackdown on transportation access might be simply to prevent guests from using Disney Springs as a free parking loophole. It was a popular “hack” shared online to suggest guests park at Disney Springs and then use the resort transportation to hop to other areas of the resort. Others worried this was part of a larger overhaul of Disney World Resort hopping.

Disney World resort hopping often features casual itineraries where guests use the easily accessible Disney World transportation, like the Disney Monorail and Skyliner, or bus transportation, to go from resort to resort. Typically, guests use these plans to hop from the different lounges and quick-service spots.

In the recent Disney Parks Blog post announcing the new dates for the holiday parties today, Disney included a statement about the Resort hotels that hinted at further restrictions coming soon. The announcement noted, “Looking to take Instagram-worthy pictures with Christmas trees and joyful decorations? Or are you looking for a place to exchange gifts with family members while soaking in the sounds of peaceful holiday music? For guests staying at the resorts or for those with valid dining reservations, the Disney Resorts Collection offers a wide array of bright and merry holiday decor.”

The specific mention of resort guests and those with dining reservations hints at further restrictions coming in the future, especially with how popular it is for guests to tour the different Resort hotels during the holiday season. For instance, the practice of resort hopping to view the Disney World gingerbread houses is very popular. This now leads us to more bad news for those who enjoy Resort hopping.

Disney World Discontinuing Popular Gingerbread Display

Gingerbread house

The most popular Disney World gingerbread display is easily the life-sized Grand Floridian Resort & Spa gingerbread Victorian-style house. This is the most in-demand gingerbread display each year, and guests flock to the lobby of this Disney resort hotel to view the house and line up to purchase snacks from the stand inside it. Unfortunately, that tradition is coming to an end.

Scott Gustin shared on X that Disney officials have confirmed that the Grand Floridian gingerbread house will not return this holiday season. Disney’s culinary teams will instead create new miniature holiday displays for the resort. More details about the gingerbread displays at other resorts will be shared later this year.

The popular gingerbread display did not return in 2025 either due to construction taking place on the Resort hotel’s lobby. However, the construction is now complete. Perhaps there is a worry about space with the new lobby bar now open, or this is a broader change to resort hopping trends.

The display at the Grand Floridian was so significant that it created large crowds at the resort from guests coming from other hotels to view it. If further restrictions are put in place, this would prevent guests from seeing this impressive display without a resort or dining reservation. Perhaps the solution was instead to just remove it and reduce the issue of holiday crowds at the hotel, which have been massive in recent years.

Disney has not announced any new policies, but the specific wording in the Disney Parks Blog could be interpreted as a hint that holiday resort access restrictions are being considered in the future. Disney World Resort hopping would still be possible if these restrictions are put in place, but it would only be with an active dining, experience, or resort reservation.
