One Big Thing in Disneyland News – Summer at Disneyland Begins

Mark Twain Riverboat at Disneyland

This week marks the beginning of the “summer break” season at Disneyland, with almost all of the schools in the area out for break by 6/5 or 6/12. Though many expect that summer would be the busiest time of the year at Disneyland, it is actually not quite as crowded as other peak times like Halloween at Disneyland in October and the holidays (including Thanksgiving at Disneyland and the busy last couple weeks of Christmas at Disneyland).

Looking ahead, if you’re considering visiting during summer at Disneyland, the best times to do so are during the month of June and late August, as crowd levels (and temperatures!) will pick up in July. However, keep in mind that a few more Disneyland 70th anniversary offerings will be introduced in mid-July, including a new show with the first-ever Walt Disney animatronic.

Generally, weekdays are going to be less crowded than weekends during the summer. In our article discussing the best days of the week to visit Disneyland, we mention how visiting towards the middle of the week (Tuesdays/Wednesdays) tends to be the best move when visiting during the summer. During July, Saturdays can also be a good day to visit, with the second-highest tier Magic Key blocked out on this day.

The second part of August can be a good time to visit, with many slower days, but keep in mind that there will be a rush of crowds initially when Magic Key blockouts summer blockouts are lifted. If you want to visit during the Halloween celebration but are trying to avoid the crowds, aim to schedule your trip during the last few days of August. In our Mickey Visit Disneyland crowd calendar, we predict that the period around August 25-29 will be a good window of time to visit for this, as most kids will be back in school by this point and the initial rush after the first few days of the Halloween celebration will have hopefully calmed down.

Important Disneyland Dates This Week

  • Grad Nite parties take place at Disney California Adventure this week on Wednesday, June 4, Friday, June 6, and Sunday, June 8. The park will close at 9 pm on these dates. Guests can stay for World of Color, but they need to exit after the show. You can see more details about Grad Nite at Disney California Adventure here.
  • Tickets are still available for both party nights of Pride Nite, which takes place a few weeks from now on June 16 and 18. You can see more details about Pride Nite at Disneyland here.

The Pride novelties include a Pride Mickey Mouse Hands Bucket, PRIDE Stainless Steel Tumbler, PRIDE Parade Castle Tumbler, and Scented PRIDE Cake Straw Clip, available at several locations. Disneyland is celebrating Pride Month with special merchandise and a floral display in Downtown Disney.
  • The bite-sized Monte Cristo is back at Royal Street Veranda! This is a fan-favorite dish and also a great option since prior to this dish, you could only get the full size by sitting down at Orleans Cafe.

  • Heads up! The Disney Store is going to start dropping the Disneyland 70th anniversary collections online with a series of releases starting next Monday on June 9. Since so many were not able to score the merchandise, this online drop will be big!

What We’re Thinking About This Week

  • Emily thought the Savannah Bananas Day last week was so cute and loved seeing how much fun the players had at the parks! Their positive energy was totally the embodiment of the 70th anniversary “Celebrate Happy” sentiment.
  • Gavin is excited to bite into the new, smaller Monte Cristo that is just returning to Royal Street Veranda. I never can finish one of these sandwiches on their own but this is the perfect size to enjoy.
  • Lindsay enjoyed seeing all the content from Savannah Bananas this week especially since she was not too familiar with them until their Disneyland visit. They may have gained a new TikTok follower!

Disneyland Crowd Calendar This Week

For the most part, the crowds are leveling out from the rush that began in mid-May, but we anticipate seeing some days of below-normal crowds and above-normal crowds mixed in. We’re heading into the start of the summer, with kids out of school on summer break. While crowds can be noticeable during the summer, this time of year is not quite as busy as some of the peak times of the year at Disneyland, like Halloween in October and the holidays. You can see our full crowds discussion looking ahead to this summer in our “One Big Thing in Disneyland News” section above.

You can see our rating of all upcoming dates in our Mickey Visit Disneyland Crowd Calendar.

New Disneyland Ride Closures This Week

Here are some of the current ride closures that are continuing into this week:

  • Matterhorn Bobsleds is closed for refurbishment
  • Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room is closed for refurbishment
  • The Disney Gallery is closed for refurbishment

You can see reopening dates for some of the above attractions and other upcoming closures in our Disneyland ride refurbishment guide.

Other Disney Content We’re Watching

First, we have this video from Brittney Lindley (@alittlebrittdisney on Instagram) highlighting the Disneyland 70th anniversary guided tour and what it includes!

Next up, we have this video from @sometimescastles on Instagram highlighting Stitch’s Interplanetary Beach Party Blast, which has returned for the summer!
