Inside Out 2 introduces some of the emotions that pop up as Riley becomes a teenager. The five emotions from the first movie (Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust) will all be returning alongside some newcomers. The sequel introduces the emotions Anxiety, Embarrassment, Envy, and Ennui, and we can see in the trailer that some chaos ensues as they are all learning to work together.
Interestingly, during the couple of comedic scenes we saw inside the minds of Riley's mom and dad in the original film, there weren't any of these new emotions (Anxiety, Embarrassment, Envy, and Ennui) in the adult brain. This seems to be a change that was made specifically for the sequel. In the trailer, however, the emotion Anxiety does pop up out of nowhere in the dad's mind. We're curious to see if all of these new emotions show up for Riley's mom and dad, just some, or if there will be an explanation provided in the sequel for why they weren't there before.
Below, we'll break down the descriptions of each of the new characters in Inside Out 2.
Anxiety (voiced by Maya Hawke) is the first new character to appear in Inside Out 2 before others follow. Anxiety is portrayed as a fast-talking, orange character with bulging eyes who is prominently featured in the promotional material for the movie. Disney describes Anxiety as “A bundle of frazzled energy, Anxiety enthusiastically ensures Riley’s prepared for every possible negative outcome.”
According to Disney, Joy faces a surprise as Anxiety “isn't the type who will take a back seat either.” We see this in action in the trailer as Anxiety seemingly kicks out the original five emotions to make room for the new emotions that she thinks will run Riley's life better.
Envy (voiced by Ayo Edebiri) is a tiny cyan character with big eyes. According to Disney, she “may be small but she sure knows what she wants. She’s perpetually jealous of everything everyone else has, and she’s not afraid to pine over it.”
Embarrassment (voiced by Paul Walter Hauser) is a big pink emotion in a hoodie that is seen throughout the trailers constantly hunched over displaying tense body language and trying to hide. According to Disney, he “likes to lay low, which isn’t easy for this burly guy with a bright blush-pink complexion.”
Ennui (voiced by Adèle Exarchopoulos) is a purple emotion who is constantly disengaged and off to the side throughout the trailers. The word “ennui” is French and means feeling dissatisfied and bored. For this interesting character, Disney shared, “Bored and lethargic with a well-practiced eye-roll, Ennui adds the perfect amount of teenage apathy to Riley’s personality, when she feels like it.”
Nostalgia (voiced by June Squibb) is another new emotion who is introduced in the film. She is depicted as an older woman wearing rose-colored glasses and carrying a cup of tea. She hasn't been highlighted that much in the promos for the movie but appears in the trailer for a few seconds to reminisce on something that just happened.
