Disneyland Construction on Two New Rides Moving Quickly. When Will New Rides Open Based on Past Precedent?

Last week, we shared that Disneyland has gone vertical on the construction of two new attractions. Work on this addition began earlier this year and moved along at what appeared to be a slow pace, but now it's moving much faster. Even though the structure just went vertical, there is already even more visible progress that spurred me to want to give you another quick look at the construction.

This new addition to Disney California Adventure will finish off the park's new Avengers Campus area and will be a dramatic improvement. We're quite excited about the two new rides coming soon. Keep reading for all details on what's coming, the major milestones being reached, and a comparison to a recent other new Disneyland ride to help us understand when these two new additions will open.

Disneyland Avengers Campus Construction Moving Quickly

Construction of the two new Disney California Adventure Avengers Campus attractions continues to move very quickly. Though construction only recently started to go vertical on the buildings for these two new rides, there has already been a lot of visible progress since that point. The dirt moving phase of the project is always quite slow because also includes the more invisible site prep work. We are now past that.

The addition will introduce two new rides to the park. There will be a major new “E-ticket” Avengers ride and a unique new ride inspired by Tony Stark. “Avengers Infinity Defense” will take guests on a “multi-world adventure” where guests will join the Avengers as they battle “King Thanos,” who has stolen the technology that the Avengers use to jump between worlds. This ride is expected to utilize a ride system that was previously used in another new Disney attraction.

In the second new ride, called “Stark Flight Lab,” guests will sit in “gyro-kinetic pods” and deploy to a test station, where a giant robot arm will swing them around in simulated flight with maneuvers inspired by the Avengers. You can see all the details about these two new rides coming and the expansion here.

The show buildings for these new attractions will be located right next to the big building in the center of the land with the Quinjet on top that currently holds a gift shop. The space, which was previously a parking lot, was cleared to dirt earlier this year, and now crews are hard at work.

Since Walt Disney Imagineering shared the below photo of the construction, there has been quick progress. Below, you can see the photo of the first beam being put down.

Now, the beams have been flying up at a dramatic pace. After waiting so long for these attractions – the pandemic closure and construction pause didn't help that – it is thrilling to see the quick progress.

Here's a look at the quick progress being made via Critter Club on Twitter/X.

You can see in the post that the structure now has an established two stories, and crews are hard at work actively adding more to the structure. Compare this to the concept artwork below, where you can see the angle of the facade.

So, the teams are moving along quickly for the project. What does that mean for when this new attraction will open at Disney California Adventure?

I already shared thoughts about when I expect each of the four new rides to open at Disney California Adventure here. This is a new data point that we can consider.

In that initial analysis, I stated, “It feels like this attraction would have to open by 2027 if they are finally ready to move forward with this attraction. Based on what we know now, this ride could coast into a 2027 opening, but we are still waiting for clearer signs that construction is moving forward with haste and that all components are ready.”

While thinking more about this and the recent “going vertical” news, I remembered another time recently when Disneyland shared that they were “going vertical” on a new attraction, so I thought it was a great time to look back at that moment. Disneyland built a similar attraction not very long ago when they prepared Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway to open in Mickey's Toontown. They made a similar Instagram post declaring that the first vertical steel had gone up in that attraction, so we can mark the time that it took from the vertical steel to the opening of the ride for an easy comparison.

On September 1, 2020, Disneyland President at the time, Ken Potrock, shared a post on Instagram announcing that “the first steel beam has been placed for what will be the future Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway attraction.” That attraction then opened on January 25, 2023. This is about 2 years and four months later. In that case, though, we understand that the attraction was actually done even a little bit earlier and held until the kickoff of the Disney100 celebration.

Using that comparison, that would mean that the new Avengers Campus attractions could open in December 2027 if they were to follow the same timeline as the Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway attraction.

There are two big caveats for using this comparison. 1. Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway was a ride that had already been built once before at Walt Disney World, which gave them the knowledge of what worked and what didn't. and 2. That was only one attraction and not two. We don't yet know if Disney will open both attractions at the same time, but right now it seems like the construction site is intertwined.

Either way, it feels like a good sign that we could see these open in mid to late 2027 (if they move faster than Mickey & Minnie's) or early 2028 if they are on about the same timeline.

There will then also be a quick succession of other new Disneyland rides opening during that period, so my guess is that they will push as hard as they can to get these attractions open earlier to give a period to promote the new additions before the next rides roll out.
