Disney Makes Change to Star Wars Experience That Was Getting Less Popular

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opened at Disneyland Resort in 2019, but over time some of its original experiences have become less popular as many repeat visitors have already tried everything the land has to offer. Disney has already started refreshing parts of the land to bring guests back, including reimagining Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run with a new The Mandalorian-themed storyline and the introduction of the original trilogy characters into the land.

Now, another Galaxy’s Edge experience is set to receive an update as Disney looks to revive interest with this newest change. Mickey Visit brings you the latest Disney news and planning resources, including a free way to attend the Disneyland Princess concert and the newest Disney+ perks.

Disneyland Introducing New Droid Depot Merchandise

Droid Depot

Droid Depot at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge has been one of the signature interactive experiences of the land, which allows guests to build and customize their own astromech or BB-series droid. When the land first opened, the experience was extremely popular, and reservations went fast as guests rushed to create their own droids.

However, demand has slowed in recent years as frequent Disneyland visitors and Star Wars fans may have already built a droid, which makes the experience less of a must-do on repeat trips.

Disney is now introducing Batuu Adventure Buddies, a new line of interactive companions inspired by the creatures of Star Wars, coming soon to Droid Depot. The first in this lineup of three Buddies is the Ewok Batuu Adventure Buddy, which includes a carrying sling, arriving on August 13 at Droid Depot in Disneyland.

Each Buddy will feature expressive eyes, motorized facial movements, signature sounds, and responsive touch interactions that react to guests’ attention. At a later date, the other two Buddies in the collection will come to Disneyland, and the full collection will debut at Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World.

Features for the new Batuu Adventure Buddies include interactive touch responses that respond to head pats and belly taps. For the Ewok Buddy, three quick, consecutive head taps will enable two special animations: Dance Party and Forest Call Chain. Endor Dance Party will create rhythmic eye animations and Ewokese chanting/drumming sounds, and nearby Ewoks may also chime in. Forest Call Chain will create a scout call to other toys, which can respond in their own languages.

The Buddies also include expressive details with LCD eye expressions, motorized facial expressions, and signature character sounds. They also react to accessories like food, toys, or tools that you place in the Buddy’s hands. They can also interact with the other droids sold in Droid Depot.

Droid Depot will sell these optional accessories and customizable gear sets inspired by iconic destinations and beloved characters from across the galaxy.

Rúna baby troll toy

The new Batuu Adventure Buddies are a similar concept to the Rúna, interactive baby troll merchandise from the World of Frozen at Disneyland Paris. These toys feature over 50 sounds and movements and interact with specific park locations, characters like Anna and Elsa, and other Rúna trolls.

This is a fun way to refresh the offerings at Droid Depot and offer guests more ways to interact with their own “creatures” in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. The other two creatures in the lineup haven’t been announced yet, but some possibilities could include creatures like Porgs, Loth-cats, or Jawas. Since we don’t have much Jawa representation, while both Porgs and Loth-cats are already available in the land, I’d place my bets on Jawas being a likely option for a future release.
