Thousands of families flock to Walt Disney World each summer, some persuaded by the allure of longer theme park hours than other parts of the year. Summer is also when many new attractions open. Disney just announced a change to its usual protocol for one day this summer, a move that will greatly impact crowd patterns. We previously announced a similar change for a upcoming date at Magic Kingdom.
EPCOT will close very early on an upcoming date, prompting pros and cons when it comes to strategizing the day as part of a Disney World vacation. We break down how the change will affect crowds and how to decide if it’s a good idea to visit on this day. EPCOT will close at 5:30 PM on July 1, 2026. The early closure is likely due to a large company buying out the park for a private event. Such early closures are rare, but they do happen from time to time. There is a similar early closure happening next month for a corporate event that will include a performance by The Dave Matthews Band.
The timing of this early closure is particularly surprising, considering the Fourth of July holiday week. See our Disney World crowd calendar to scope out the best times to visit.
EPCOT’s usual closing time is 9 PM, so guests visiting on July 1 will have 3.5 hours less time than they normally would. This also means daytime guests won’t see the park’s nightly fireworks spectacular, Luminous The Symphony of Us.
However, the fewer hours spent in the park on July 1 might be offset by lower crowds. Such an early closing time will be a huge turn-off to many guests on vacation and Orlando locals. This might create a scenario in which guests visiting EPCOT on July 1 accomplish more attractions than they would on a more crowded day, even with 3.5 fewer hours in the schedule.
A day with lighter crowds might also mean there’s less need to purchase Lightning Lane reservations for usually high-demand attractions like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind. On top of saving money, guests might experience the park at a more leisurely, less stressful pace without having to keep track of Lightning Lanes.
The inverse of this situation might mean the other parks could experience larger-than-usual crowds, even by summertime standards, as guests avoid EPCOT to visit Magic Kingdom, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, or Disney’s Animal Kingdom instead.
A 1-day park ticket for EPCOT on July 1, when it closes at 5:30 PM, costs $174. That’s $10 cheaper than June 30 and $4 cheaper than July 2, when the park is open until 9 PM.
Summer 2026 ticket deals valid on July 1 include the 4-Park Magic Ticket and the After 2 PM Ticket.

Guests who begin their day at EPCOT and then park-hop to a different Disney World destination have a few options. Here are all the theme park hours for July 1, 2026:
- Magic Kingdom: 9 AM – 10 PM
- EPCOT: 9 AM – 5:30 PM
- Disney’s Hollywood Studios: 9 AM – 9 PM
- Disney’s Animal Kingdom: 8 AM – 6 PM
As they do every day, all four theme parks will open 30 minutes earlier than the posted opening time on July 1 for guests staying at Disney World hotels as part of Early Theme Park Entry.
Magic Kingdom will stay open later, until 12 AM, on July 1 for guests staying at deluxe-tier Disney World hotels as part of Extended Evening Hours.
Disney’s Hollywood Studios will host Disney After Hours from 9:30 PM – 12:30 AM on July 1, but this is a separately ticketed event that requires separate admission, even for park-hoppers.
On July 1, both Disney World water parks, Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon and Disney’s Blizzard Beach, are open from 10 AM – 7 PM. Disney Springs is open from 10 AM – 11 PM.
