Could This Be A Sign Bluey Will Come To The Disney Parks?

If you follow cartoons and/or have young kids, you probably have heard of the popular show called Bluey which is now available on Disney+. The show Bluey follows the story of a family of Blue Heeler dogs with the six-year-old Bluey as its main character.

Bluey has become increasingly popular not just with children but with adults and is one of the most-watched television shows on Disney+.

This has led to Disney making a big decision to move forward with Bluey that might also impact the potential for appears for Bluey at Disneyland or Walt Disney World!

Disney Announces Bluey Movie

Disney has announced that a Bluey movie will be coming to theaters in 2027. The film is being written and directed by the original creator, Joe Brumm. It's not often that Disney releases movies it does not own but now that Bluey is the number one streamed show in 2024, it makes sense to take the steps towards releasing a Bluey film.

Previously we shared that we thought that the biggest blocker around bringing Bluey to the theme parks is that the show is licensed for Disney+ and not owned by Disney directly. That means that any parks appearance by the characters would require an additional partnership and perhaps monetary participation from the creators of Bluey and the production company that owns the rights.

Bluey is super popular and the average consumer can't discern Bluey from any other show on Disney+. For US consumers, this is a Disney property. And now with Disney releasing a Bluey movie, that really becomes more of a reality. I wouldn't be surprised to see Bluey and Bingo doing appearances at the Disney Parks in 2027 to celebrate the release of the film.

What is Bluey About?

bluey at disneyland

Bluey is an Australian animated television series that originally premiered on ABC Kids in 2018 before it made its US debut on Disney Junior and is now available internationally on Disney+.

The show itself targets a preschool-aged audience yet it's been a hit with all ages which is unusual for a show with such a young target audience! Bluey follows the main character of Bluey, a six-year-old Blue Heeler puppy, with an energetic and imaginative personality. Bluey's family fills out the rest of the character list with her father, Bandit; mother, Chilli; and younger sister, Bingo. Bingo often joins Bluey in their imaginative play together along with the girls' father, Bandit, who often works from home. Bandit is an archaeologist, he loves to dig bones after all, and it appears that most of his work happens at home leaving him free to be with Bluey and Bingo during the day.

Common themes in the show focus on positive messaging around family, imagination, and growing up. The program was created in Queensland and the capital city of Brisbane is the inspiration for the show's setting.

Why Is Bluey So Popular?

Bluey Disneyland

Bluey has won multiple awards in categories of children's programming and received praise from critics. Much of the praise surrounding Bluey has focused on the positive parenting messages especially with Bandit as such an involved father figure. Bluey presents a more modernized family life that many children (and adults!) can relate to. Especially when we see a father figure who is actively involved in his relationship with the kids and participating in work that is typically seen as domestic labor. It is refreshing to see a children's show embrace a more modern dynamic of parenting and forego the “lazy dad” Homer Simpson-style stereotype.

The humor of the show is fairly intelligent and appealing to adults. Many of the jokes and references seem to be targeted at the parents while remaining appropriate for the family. The show even references pop culture, again something mostly adults will notice, with references from Indiana Jones to even Stranger Things. Bluey is also great for ideas when it comes to thinking up fun games and activities with your kids. I wish this show had been around when my son was small, we would have had a blast playing games featured in the show. Unfortunately for me, I was stuck with Thomas the Train. Not quite as exciting for parents but still notorious in its own right.

Bluey also does a great job of relating to parents by showing the two parents on the show, Bandit and Chilli, making mistakes and addressing them. The struggle of parenting is depicted realistically which is refreshing to see for both parents and kids. The show sends positive messages in various ways even if it's something as something as showing diversity through the wide range of dog breeds featured on the show. It does have some great messages, the more I watched, the more I discovered.

I first heard of Bluey as a recommendation for a television show for your dogs! Yes, you read that right. Some dog owners, myself included, will leave the television on for their dogs when they leave the house. Bluey features characters in shades of yellows and blues which are colors that dogs often see most vividly. And, well, it's about dogs. I will say that my dogs, especially my golden retriever mix, watch the television when I put it on so they will vouch for Bluey. Dogs are also one of the best animals (no bias here!) and one of the most popular pets. It does make sense dog owners would gravitate to this show.

Bluey has been an unexpected hit with many audiences outside of just families with small children. According to recent reports, Bluey is now the most-watched show on any streaming network and easily the most popular show on Disney+. The most recent Neilsen report, which ranks streaming shows by the amount of time viewers watch, revealed that Bluey totaled 3.8 billion minutes. This is extremely impressive for any streaming show, especially for one targeting young audiences.

Bluey x CAMP Immersive Experience

Bluey Disneyland

Bluey's popularity is not going underrecognized as companies seek to partner with the hit television show and offer family experiences. Most recently, CAMP, The Family Experience Company with locations in major cities across the US including Los Angeles, opened an immersive Bluey experience.

The Bluey x CAMP immersive experience allows kids to explore Bluey's house including interactive games from the show like Magic Asparagus to Keep Uppy, dance parties in Bluey's playroom, climbing through pillow forts and cardboard castles, plus a scavenger hunt filled with Bluey episode Easter eggs. The experience ends with a meet and greet with Bingo and Bluey as the grand finale of the experience. Tickets for the show have been limited as this new experience has been a hit!

Disney Bluey

Disney is actually a partial investor in the CAMP stores so they may have a direct view into the success of this temporary Bluey experience there.

So this leads us to our point of the article, is Bluey ever going to come to Disneyland or Walt Disney World?

Potential for Bluey at Disneyland & Disney World

Unfortunately, there are no current announcements regarding a Bluey appearance at Disneyland or Walt Disney World. I feel this is a big mistake and I hope that Disney changes course soon to bring Bluey to the parks. The most we have seen of a Bluey presence at the theme parks was a short-lived scavenger hunt at Fort Wilderness Campground & Resort at Walt Disney World. This experience was brief and cast members at the time did not indicate any plans for its return. This was far from an immersive experience and one that seemed to be similar to the current scavenger hunts we see taking place at EPCOT during festivals.

Bluey and Bingo also made an appearance at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Convention which gives us hope that Disney is making moves towards continuing to expand the Bluey presence at Disney.

It is time to bring Bluey to Disneyland and Walt Disney World! The recent popularity of the show would nearly guarantee a Bluey character meet and greet would be a smash hit. Perhaps even one that would bring some life to the current Disney Junior lineup at the parks which doesn't draw many crowds aside from a small niche audience of parents with younger kids. Since Bluey seems to be universally beloved, we might see a bit more hype for a Disney Junior show that incorporates Bluey.

phineas and ferb

Perhaps Disney is worried that this Bluey popularity will be short-lived and may not have the staying power to be worth the investment of a permanent Bluey meet and greet. But we have also seen brief character meet and greets come and go, especially at Disneyland with Avengers Campus being a revolving door of characters as new shows on Disney+ debut. Walt Disney World also had an entire substantial scavenger hunt experience to Phineas and Ferb that has since been switched over to DuckTales World Showcase Adventure.

While there is no official Bluey news now aside from the upcoming film in 2027, that could change in the future. Maybe we'll see Bluey show up as part of a Disneyland After Dark event since so many tend to bring out the rare characters. I do hope for more than that though, a Bluey meet and greet in California Adventure would be perfect. What if we went as far as to create a Bluey show to replace the Disney Junior Dance Party in California Adventure? They could even have an entire event just around Bluey and really pull out all the stops. This is something we could see show up at Disney World's Hollywood Studios too.

Keep in mind, this is purely hopes and dreams and there is no indication of a Bluey presence coming to the Disney Parks. But we do hope that will change in the future.

  1. While I appreciate the mentality articles like this reinforce that Americans have such a US centric view with no consideration of outside viewpoints. Australians (the homeland of Bluey) don’t know Bliey as a Disney property. It’s not screened on Disney plus here. It’s far more likely Bluey would end up in one of Brisbane’s theme parks than in the USA. Encourages tourism to Australia. AFAIK Disney doesn’t have any non Disney owned characters appearing in their theme parks and that should continue.
