Disney Bringing Bluey Movie to Theaters

The popularity of the Australian animated television series Blue on Disney+ continues to grow and we have been arguing for awhile it's long overdue for Bluey experiences to come to the Disney Parks.

The show Bluey follows the story of a family of Blue Heeler dogs with the six-year-old Bluey as its main character. Common themes in the show focus on positive messaging around family, imagination, and growing up that has resonated with adult audiences along with kids.

Bluey has become increasingly popular and is one of the most-watched television shows on Disney+. So it's a no brainer for Disney to make the move to bring Bluey to the theaters!

Bluey originally premiered in Australia on ABC Kids in 2018 before it made its US debut on Disney Junior and is now available internationally on Disney+. The film will be written and directed by the creator, Joe Brumm, and is a Ludo Studio production in collaboration with BBC Studios. The movie is said to “deliver the same charm and humor” that made the television series so popular and will continue to tell the story of Bluey and her family.

The New York Times shared that Brumm states he wants this to be an “experiential event” with the voice actors all reprising their roles. They also reported that Brumm added he would “take a break” from the series saying, “To walk away from it while it’s at such a height will seem crazy to some. But for now, I am finding it difficult to reach back genuinely into that four- to six-year-old world and write authentically.” This does not mean that show is coming to an end but that Brumm is acknowledging his focus is now pivoting to the film's creation.

Disney rarely releases movies it does not own and the article shared that Bluey has now more than 50 million minutes streamed in the United States in 2024 which is enough to make it the number one streaming show of the year.

The Bluey Movie will arrive in theaters in 2027 and later be released on Disney+.
