Animal Kingdom is one of the most underrated theme parks at Walt Disney World but this is actually one of my favorite parks to visit! Disney has continued to expand the Christmas decorations and special offerings at Animal Kingdom in recent years and every holiday season we see more added to the mix. Visiting Animal Kingdom during Christmas at Disney World is most like a celebration of the winter solstice and I love the way Disney has incorporated the natural beauty of winter into the decor. I visit Animal Kingdom every trip to Walt Disney World and spend a significant amount of time at this park, especially during the holiday season.
Let's go over all the Animal Kingdom Christmas offerings including park-exclusive holiday food, decorations, and characters plus the nighttime holiday show on the Tree of Life! Plus, we will share details on a new offering announced for this year's Animal Kingdom Christmas celebration below.

Meeting Santa Claus at Animal Kingdom
This year during the Christmas celebration, guests will be able to meet Santa Claus at Animal Kingdom! Visitors will be able to meet Santa at the 75th Annual Dino Institute Holiday Party on the patio at Restaurantosaurus from November 12-December 24. See the concept art Disney shared for this meet-and-greet above!
Animal Kingdom Holiday Decorations
Let's dive into where you can find all the holiday decorations in Animal Kingdom. They are more concentrated in certain areas while some lands do not have decorations at all. If you are looking at how to celebrate the holidays at Animal Kingdom, it helps to know which areas of the park are most concentrated.
The lands that decorate for holidays at Animal Kingdom are Discovery Island, Asia, Africa, and Pandora- The World of Avatar.
Animal Kingdom Front Entrance
The front of the park entrance at Animal Kingdom features an enormous Christmas tree decorated with ornaments inspired by various wildlife, and winter themes plus African and Asian culture.
This park tree makes for a great photo opportunity and there will often be at least one PhotoPass photographer stationed there to take photos of guests. I suggest taking a picture during the day and at night so you have options to pick from especially if you plan on purchasing Memory Maker for your trip
Discovery Island
Once you enter Animal Kingdom, this is where you will find the most obvious Christmas decorations in the park alongside the street in front of the Tree of Life. This area features light-up lanterns of animals and twinkling lights with the Tree of Life alternating winter-themed projections in the evening before the nightly show takes place.
This area of Animal Kingdom will feature the most obvious holiday Animal Kingdom decorations while other areas of the park are a bit more subtle. This is really the center of all the main seasonal celebrations, shows, characters, and shopping in Animal Kingdom.
Asia and Africa
The Animal Kingdom decorations in Africa blend together Western traditions and African celebrations in the village of Harambe.
Asia is decorated with glowing flowers and lanterns in celebration of Diwali, the festival of lights in India.
Pandora – The World of Avatar
There will be some holiday lights and decorations in Pandora located near the Pongu Pongu.
Animal Kingdom Tree of Life Awakenings
The nighttime show at Animal Kingdom is the Tree of Life Awakenings which takes place at dusk and shows every 10 minutes until the park closes.
During the holiday season at Walt Disney World, the Tree of Life Awakenings runs a holiday edition featuring wintry tales and a musical score. The projections feature foxes in a wintry forest, hummingbirds, and a doe. The Tree of Life Awakenings are always a beautiful sight to see with these colorful projections on the Tree of Life.
To see the Tree of Life Awakenings, you will need to plan on being in Animal Kingdom after dusk. The good news is that in the winter season, it does get dark much earlier so this is easier to accomplish even with the early closing hours at Animal Kingdom. The Tree of Life is located right next to the main shops in Animal Kingdom on Discovery Island that stay open an hour past closing so you can view this show after the park closes. There's no need to arrive early, the Tree of Life is so large that you can see the show easily from wherever you stand in the area.
Animal Kingdom Holiday Characters
You can also find characters in seasonal holiday outfits throughout the park but the real show stopper are the Merry Menagerie puppets greeting guests on Discovery Island. These life-size, artisan-sculpted animal puppets truly embody the theme of Animal Kingdom.
You can find reindeer, foxes, polar bears, and even small penguins! We really enjoyed meeting these characters, the puppeteers are amazing and were great at the level of immersion with the kids. They even got my teenager to laugh and smile during their interaction, they acted the part so well. This is such a unique part of the Animal Kingdom holiday celebration, that you cannot miss it.
These winter puppets will appear sporadically throughout the day at Discovery Island in front of the Tree of Life. Since this is the main pathway into the park, most guests will bump into them easily.
You can also find the classic Disney characters, like Mickey and Minnie Mouse, in their seasonal attire at Adventurers Outpost.
Donald Duck and Daisy Duck both don holiday outfits for Dino-Bash in DinoLand which will also feature festive lights and backdrops.

Yes, Animal Kingdom celebrates Christmas with special Tree of Life projection shows, decorations, and winter animal puppets at the front of the park.
Animal Kingdom has the most minimal holiday celebrations out of all the four Walt Disney World theme parks but there are still some offerings that make at least a half day trip worth it if you're focused on holidays at Walt Disney World.
Since Animal Kingdom doesn't host as large of a holiday celebration, this is also the least crowded park on Christmas Day.
Animal Kingdom does some festive decorations, winter projections on the Tree of Life plus amazing winter puppet animals that guests can interact with.
