They have now added a reopening date for the attraction to the calendar, though it could change again.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Disneyland is now scheduled to reopen on October 25, 2025. The ride will have been closed for nearly 2 months. See all details on other closures at Disneyland during this period at the end of this article.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is the most popular family roller coaster at Disneyland. This ride is themed to a runaway mine train that drops into an abandoned gold mine. There are versions of this attraction at Disneyland, Walt Disney World, Disneyland Paris, and Tokyo Disneyland. This version in Disneyland in Anaheim, California was the first version of the attraction built.
Based on the length of the refurbishment and the lack of announcements, we don't expect there to be any noticeable changes to the attraction when it reopens. Disneyland typically has refurbishments like this for attractions throughout the year to take apart and check on all aspects of the ride track and ride vehicles for the safety of guests.

There is currently a lengthy Big Thunder Mountain renovation happening at Walt Disney World in Florida that will add a new show scene. Disneyland previously had a lengthy refurbishment for this version of the attraction in 2014 that introduced the current finale scene with the exploding mine shaft.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in Magic Kingdom closed earlier this year on January 6, 2025, and Disney previously shared that it will reopen in 2026 with a “new bit of magic.”
In addition to a “mountain-top to cavern-deep refurbishment” to keep the attraction in good shape, there will also be some changes coming to the lift hill scene. In the moment when the trains go underground into caverns of phosphorescent pools, the rainbow caverns will transform to red caverns with a loud crack of thunder. You can read about all the changes coming to that version of the ride here.
Turning back to Disneyland, there are currently a number of other closures scheduled throughout September and October. You can see our Mickey Visit Disneyland refurbishment list for those closures. At the time of the Big Thunder Mountain closure, there are also three other closures – Storybook Canal Boats, Casey Jr. Circus Train, and Mickey's PhilharMagic. See all the known dates for those closures and the others happening before that at the previous link to our list.
These closures are taking place into the busier October time frame at Disneyland. Last year Disneyland ran a ticket special into September which kept crowds high, but this year there is no such special. They did just release a new Disneyland discount pin ticket deal for guests. We anticipate that crowds at Disneyland will build back up once we are into October as the Halloween fever increases and there are more school breaks.
