Disney previously shared how for Stark Flight Lab, guests will sit in two-person pods and deploy to a test station where a robot arm grabs their pod and they are whirled around in simulated flight. We got a few more details about what this ride will entail! Robert Downey Jr. made an appearance during the SXSW panel to help share this news.
In this new ride, guests will be seated in “gyro-kinetic pods” and roll along a track before stopping in front of a giant robot arm, which will “hoist you into the air where you’ll make several high-speed maneuvers inspired by Iron Man and some other Avengers.”
Chief Creative Officer for Walt Disney Imagineering Bruce Vaughn talked about the technology behind this new attraction. “Transferring from a track to a robot arm and then back again – nothing like this has ever been done before in a theme park, and we’re so excited about it,” Bruce explained. “Usually, we hide all the tech behind the scenes so you can focus on the story. Here, the tech IS the story, so we’re putting it front and center.”
After Robert Downey Jr., who will be reprising his role as Iron Man for the attraction, commented on how much the arm for Stark Flight looked like Tony Stark's robotic helper DUM-E, they decided to lean into this for the attraction. The team used dancers and motion capture to make a “virtual mirror” to include some of these movements, so that the robots in the ride “feel as lifelike as possible, just like DUM-E.”

We did not get any super major updates at SXSW on the new Avengers e-ticket ride, but in the previous big announcement, Disney revealed the concept art and storyline details for Avengers Infinity Defense. Disney shared that the ride will be a multi-world adventure going to locations like Asgard, Wakanda, and New York City as they help the Avengers fight King Thanos, who has stolen the technology that allows the Avengers to jump between worlds and is using it to wreak havoc.
Disney also previously shared a look at the world-jumping ride vehicle for the ride “featuring a design that combines elements of Tony Stark’s time-suits with Xandarian jump points and Wakandan technology” and the detail that the attraction would feature “physical worlds” which would be brought to life with “with a blend of large-scale built environments and immersive media.”
