Porto’s Bakery Coming to Disneyland’s Downtown Disney – Opening Info, Concept Revealed!

Disneyland visitors are anxiously looking forward to the addition of Porto's Bakery & Cafe to Downtown Disney, which is part of a larger reimagining of the area to add new dining locations and experiences for guests to enjoy.

When it was originally announced that Porto's would be coming to Downtown Disney at the last D23 Expo, there was an extremely positive response, indicating that it is going to be quite a popular addition.

The iconic Southern California bakery is famous for its sweet pastries and desserts, as well as its California-Cuban-inspired dishes. We will take you through everything you need to know about the addition of Porto's to Downtown Disney, including where it will be located, what we know so far about the opening period, and what it will offer. NEW Concept Art Revealed For Porto's Bakery

Disney has revealed the concept for Porto’s in Downtown Disney, including the news that this will be the first Porto's location with sit-down table service and a full bar! Visitors will also be able to pick up favorite treats from the Bakery and Café which we imagine will be more similar to a standard Porto's Location.

Here is the first look at the space that Disney shared! It looks massive, and it will be a big undertaking to transform the current space.

This may be why Disney has been more vague about the opening timeline (which you can read more about in the sections below). This looks like it will be a longer project, but the concept for the space itself looks fantastic. I am hoping that it doesn't overshadow either the park entrance or World of Disney which are located on either side. The concept art may be making this space look far larger than it actually is.

A sad realization from seeing the concept artwork is just how long the creation of this new space can take. It's already been over two years since the restaurant's announcement at D23 Expo. I was hoping we would see this soon. Maybe work will finally begin, but even then a space like this takes over a year to build. Would love to be wrong.

Porto's Bakery at Disneyland Status – Update!

While there were recently some updates announced regarding four new additions coming to Downtown Disney and their opening information, as well as news on what will be replacing Tortilla Jo's, there was unfortunately no update shared for the timeline of when work will start for Porto's at Disneyland.

However, the pop-up Earl of Sandwich location near Star Wars Trading Post recently officially opened after having been visible for several months. We took this news as a sign that construction may finally be close to starting to transform the current Earl of Sandwich space for the opening of Porto's. 

After this development, we got the first indication of Porto's opening period. In a post by Scott Gustin, he shares how Porto's mentioned in a news release about their new seventh location “coming to Downtown Disney in Anaheim in 2025.” We anticipate there will be news from Disney soon with more specifics regarding Porto's opening next year.  

Porto's Bakery & Cafe Offerings – Here's What's Coming to Disneyland!

Porto's Bakery & Cafe is a beloved destination, with several locations across Southern California. When Porto's opens at Downtown Disney, visitors will be able to enjoy items like their popular Potato Ball (Papa Rellena) (containing Porto's signature potato puree filled with Rosa's original picadillo), Cheese Roll (puff pastry with Porto's signature cream cheese filling), Chicken Empanada (savory pie with Cuban-style chicken fricassee), and Refugiado (Guava and Cheese Strudel).

Porto's has taken the #1 spot on “Yelp’s Top 100 Places to Eat in the US,” and in 2021, it was voted Best Bakery in the Southland according to the Los Angeles Times. We anticipate that Porto’s will be extremely popular and one of the best Downtown Disney dining locations when it opens at Downtown Disney!

While Porto's at Downtown Disney is still in the works, if you're looking to try some of their famous treats, you can visit the location in Buena Park, which is about 10 minutes away from Disneyland by car. You can see more about Porto's in this nice behind the scenes video.

Porto's Downtown Disney Opening Date

When Disney Parks Chairman Josh D'Amaro announced that Porto's was coming to Disneyland during the D23 Expo in 2022 there was a thunderous applause that rippled through the entire hall. People were fired up! Later when we shared the moment to Instagram and TikTok it was viewed millions of times. My favorite comment on the reel was “I thought portos in an apple event!” because the grand nature of the reveal really did feel like an Apple event. And, people went crazy like it was the first iPhone when the bakery was announced. After the announcement the thousands of attendees in Hall D23 then received their own boxes of Porto's snacks to enjoy.

We do not yet have an opening date for Porto's at Downtown Disney, but there have been some recent developments. As we mention earlier in this article, a Porto's news release mentioned the Downtown Disney location will be opening in 2025. 

Porto's is going to be taking Earl of Sandwich's spot (where La Brea Bakery Cafe formerly was), but there hasn't been a formal announcement on when the space will close for the transformation to begin. We are anticipating that additional construction will be needed in order to expand the current Earl of Sandwich location before Porto's opens.

It was announced last year that Earl of Sandwich would be opening a new pop-up location this winter in the west end of Downtown Disney, and Disney confirmed that it is possible two Earl of Sandwich locations may be open simultaneously. We can take the addition of this new pop-up location as a sign that construction for Porto's is one step closer, but no firm announcements have been made yet. We are anticipating some more news will come soon regarding the status of Porto's at Disneyland.

What we expect is that when the new Earl of Sandwich pop-up location opens that the current location will close in order for full work to begin on Porto's Bakery. Once we see Earl of Sandwich close it will mean that we are much closer to the opening of Porto's.

Downtown Disney Expansion

Along with the addition of Porto's coming soon to Downtown Disney, there are also some other major changes coming to the area. In addition to the recent opening of three new Mexican restaurant concepts and Din Tai Fung, there will also be more new offerings added at Downtown Disney including the new Parkside Market and a steakhouse restaurant and adjacent barbecue eatery replacing the former Tortilla Jo's space.
