Disneyland Must Change Iconic Opening Day Ride by Imposed California Deadline

One of Disneyland’s most iconic attractions is facing a state-imposed deadline. If Disneyland does not comply with the deadline, this opening-day attraction will be forced to close.

This issue has been years in the making, with Disney announcing a few years ago that changes were coming, but now the clock is ticking for Disneyland to address it. Let’s get into all the most recent details of the state-imposed deadline and the future of this popular attraction. Mickey Visit brings you the latest Disney news and planning resources, including new sold-out dates for a popular Disney After Hours event and the cheapest way to have a Disney wedding.

Disneyland Faces Increasing Pressure to Modify Autopia

Disneyland Autopia cars

Disneyland’s historic Autopia attraction is the only remaining Tomorrowland ride that dates back to Disneyland’s opening day in 1955. The nostalgic attraction allows guests to take a journey aboard a car with a working gas pedal and steering wheel, and is especially popular with kids. Many of us have vivid memories of driving these Autopia cars as kids, as our first experience as “real drivers,” even though the cars are guided by an undercarriage guard rail.

One of the most common criticisms of Autopia is how long overdue it is to replace the gas-powered engines and transition to electric ones instead. The noise and the strong smell of the gas in this area for the attraction have become a deterrent for many guests, myself included, who skip the attraction because of it.

Disney announced in 2024 that future changes would be coming to the iconic attraction as they evaluate the technology to convert the gas engines to electric. At this time, the timeline shared by Disney was within the “next few years,” with news outlets being told to expect the change by “Fall 2026.” This timeline was later modified by Disney last month, with the project being pushed to early 2027. Disney has confirmed that the attraction’s current engines will be retired under an agreement with the California Air Resources Board.

We recently learned, thanks to reporting from Climate Colored Goggles that was later picked up by the Orange County Register and KTLA News, that Disneyland is facing a strict state-mandated deadline. Disneyland has until the date of February 1, 2027, to retire or close the gas-powered Autopia cars, according to a settlement agreement with the California Air Resources Board. The classic Tomorrowland attraction must transition to fully electric vehicles by this date.

Disneyland was issued a violation notice in 2024, which alleged that Autopia’s gas engines were not in compliance with state emissions rules. As part of this settlement, Disney paid a $56,250 penalty and agreed to make changes to the attraction while also disclosing that the Honda‑built engines were not properly certified.

Last month, Disneyland officials confirmed to KTLA that they had reached an agreement to retire the gas engines in early 2027. Disney shared that work is already in process, designing and engineering the new fully electric ride vehicles, and more details will be released soon.

According to the records obtained, the attraction in its current form must close by February 1, 2027. Disney will have to transition the cars to electric models by that date or close the attraction while work takes place to modify them. No official closure date has been announced by Disneyland yet.

At Walt Disney World, Disney has not made a similar announcement for Tomorrowland Speedway. The Magic Kingdom attraction continues to use gas-powered vehicles, and Disney’s official description still refers to them as such. While fans have long speculated that the Florida attraction could eventually receive electric vehicles, no conversion plans or closure dates have been announced by Disney. We hope this positive change will also be made at Disney World.
