As Disney uses emerging technology to update old theme park rides and modernize operations systems, what came before naturally becomes Disney history. One of Disney’s more covert, but fondly remembered, systems just reached its end.
Disney theme parks have discontinued a tool used to estimate wait times of popular rides after nearly three decades of using the system. We have details on this old-school tool’s removal and why it’s not needed anymore. Mickey Visit brings you the latest Disney news and planning resources, including our pick for Disney World’s best Princess character meal and a huge change this year to Disneyland’s Halloween party.

Disney Discontinues Red Cards to Track Wait Times
In 1999, Disney theme parks introduced a system called Fabulous Line Information Keeper, nicknamed FLIK after the protagonist from the Pixar movie A Bug’s Life.

FLIK helped Disney estimate how long it took for a guest to board an attraction, starting from the time the guest entered the queue, so that an accurate wait time could be displayed on the attraction’s entrance sign.
Disney did this by distributing a red plastic card on a lanyard periodically to guests entering the queue. Text on the card said, “This card is used to help us provide you with the most accurate wait time. Please hand the card to a cast member at the end of the line. Thank you.”
FLIK was utilized at both Disneyland Resort in California and Walt Disney World in Florida. Many guests cherished the opportunity of being handed a FLIK card, feeling as if they were part of the park’s mechanics with a special job to do.
Over the past few years, Disney has gradually removed the FLIK cards. The low-tech method may have provided a fun responsibility for guests, but it became redundant in light of modern systems. Effective June 2026, Disney has officially discontinued the FLIK red cards from the parks.
The news was shared by Jonathan Reuel, a product director who’s been with Disney since 1992 and was part of the FLIK launch team, on LinkedIn. The final attraction that still used the FLIK red cards was Goofy’s Sky School, a roller coaster at Disney California Adventure.

Though the FLIK system seems quaint in an era when Disney can track the location of anyone who grants permission to do so while using their apps, FLIK was revolutionary in Disney’s advancement of line operations procedures at the advent of the new millennium. Guests who fulfilled their FLIK-holding responsibility at any point over the last 27 years can look back and know they helped an important task get done.
On the subject of major changes to ’90s-era experiences, Disney World recently modernized Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, which opened in 1998. See how to score the most points in the updated attraction.
Looking ahead, Disney World will also overhaul Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress by changing every scene in the Audio-Animatronics spectacle, which was last updated in 1993. See what’s changing here. The final day to ride Carousel of Progress in its current form is July 5, 2026.
