Every player has their own blaster and accumulates points throughout the ride. Each ride vehicle carries two people and includes a joystick that riders can use to spin the vehicle in any direction to help them aim at more targets.

This attraction debuted in 1998 and underwent major upgrades in 2026. We think it looks and feels better than ever with updated technology, a new character, and new ways of scoring points.

Here are five tips we’ve used to get a high score on Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, plus a bonus tip at the end for a freebie souvenir.

1. Get Your Bearings

Upon boarding your ride vehicle, take a moment to notice the color of your blaster. The left rider has a red blaster, and the right rider has a green blaster. As you hit targets throughout the ride, they’ll light up with your corresponding color.

The first scene of Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is a practice round. This is a new sequence added in the 2026 update, and features a new Audio-Animatronics character named Buddy. She briefly instructs riders on how to use their blasters and score points.

Don’t pass up the opportunity to get these early reps in. Just because you’re not earning points yet doesn’t mean the practice round isn’t helpful! Getting your bearings here sets you up better for when the real gameplay begins immediately afterward.

2. Choose Your Targets Wisely

Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin

Not all targets are equal in Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin. Targets located farther away from your ride vehicle are worth more points, so aim for those.

This would mean that when given the choice of your ride vehicle facing an area with multiple close-up targets or an area with one far-away target, you might have a better chance of scoring more points with the latter strategy.

3. Look for Targets with a White Ring

Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin

While riding, if you see a target light up, it’s not just for show. Targets illuminated with a white ring are worth double points!

White rings appear randomly and don’t linger, so if you see one, make it your priority. When you hit a white ring, you’ll feel a haptic effect in your blaster.

4. Look for the Rare Multicolor Ring

White rings are beneficial, but multicolor rings are even better. At any given time, there is one target within Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin illuminated with a multicolor ring. The multicolor ring only lasts for a few seconds, and once it’s gone from the target, its position moves to another target elsewhere in the ride.

There is only one multicolored ring illuminated at a time on the entire ride, making it very rare. If you hit the multicolored ring, it unlocks more high-value targets.

The multicolor ring activates a bonus mode where all targets nearby are worth more points for you and all other players around you. The rings all kind of look like they have a stained glass effect. This is your best chance to secure a very high score. After we hit a flurry of these, we picked up 400,000 points in one room.

On the one hand, extra points! On the other hand, if your family members or friends, who you’re trying to win against, are close by, they’ll also have access to the extra points.

5. Don’t Stop Playing

Don’t just rely on the high-value targets. You might be thinking, as long as you luckily land upon an illuminated target, there’s no reason to keep playing. The Imagineers are one step ahead of you, and reward the players who actively participate during the whole ride.

Keep hitting targets the entire way through because at the end of the ride, players are rewarded extra points based on the number of targets they’ve hit.

Bonus Tip: Become Galactic Hero, Get a Special Button

Galactic Hero screen

At the end of the attraction, every rider receives their Space Ranger ranking based on the number of points they scored. The highest of these is Galactic Hero. Previously, points maxed out at 999,999. With the updated version of the ride, it’s now possible to score over 1 million points!

Here’s the breakdown:

  • 0-1,000: Star Flyer
  • 1,001-10,000: Solar Navigator
  • 10,001-100,000: Astro Aviator
  • 100,001-300,000: Planetary Pilot
  • 300,001-600,000: Space Ace
  • 600,001-999,999: Cosmic Commando
  • 1,000,000+: Galactic Hero

The updated screens in each ride vehicle show you your ranking. Previously, the analog-looking score display only showed numbers and nothing else.

If you score at least 1 million points, reaching the highest rank of Galactic Hero, take a photo of your vehicle’s screen before disembarking the ride.

Show your photo to a cast member at the Store Command gift shop as you exit the ride to receive a free “I’m Celebrating: Becoming a Galactic Hero” button, pictured at the top of this article.

Good luck, Space Rangers!
