Disney Adults Share the Best Smells at Disneyland and Where to Find Them!

Disneyland is a place where magic comes to life, not just through its attractions and characters, but through its enchanting scents that evoke nostalgia and excitement. Whether it’s the sweet aroma of freshly baked churros wafting down Main Street, the comforting scent of popcorn, or the subtle earthy fragrance of the enchanted gardens, each scent adds to the sensory experience of the park.

We recently came across a Reddit post asking “What is the best smell at Disneyland and why is it Pirates?” We'll get into what makes the smell of the water on Pirates of the Caribbean one of the best Disneyland smells, as well as other examples Reddit users provided in this post.

In this article, we’ll explore some of the best smells at Disneyland that make the park’s atmosphere so uniquely delightful and memorable for guests of all ages. From fresh food to artificial smells, these scents are an integral part of the Disneyland experience, contributing to the magic in ways you might not even realize!

Pirates of the Caribbean Water

Disneyland Pirates of the Caribbean

Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland is a classic attraction that takes guests on an adventurous journey through a swashbuckling world of pirates. Set in a Caribbean port, riders sail through dark caverns, past treasures, and encounter a host of mischievous pirates, including the infamous Captain Jack Sparrow. The ride is known for its intricate set designs, clever animatronics, and lively pirate-themed soundtrack, including the famous “Yo Ho (A Pirate's Life for Me)” song. As one of the park’s most beloved attractions, Pirates of the Caribbean has captivated generations of visitors with its rich storytelling, immersive atmosphere, and most importantly, that specific scent coming from the water of the boat ride.

Reddit user tex1ntux stated their favorite Disneyland smell is “bromine and bromine.” This is because Disney uses the bromine chemical to treat the water in Pirates of the Caribbean. Unlike chlorine, bromine is considered safer for guests on the attraction who may get splashed. This scent is often described as damp, musty, or slightly chemical. Although bromine doesn't sound like it would smell nice on paper, for some reason it just fits well with the attraction and truly makes it feel as if you are sailing on a pirate ship. It is a very popular answer when asked what are some of the best smells at Disneyland.

Orange Groves and Other Scents on Soarin'

Soarin' Around the World is a breathtaking flight-themed attraction at Disneyland that give guests the sensation of soaring through some of the world’s most iconic landmarks and natural wonders. Before it was updated to Soarin' Around the World, the attraction was originally called Soarin' Over California, and gave guests aerial views of California landmarks like Napa Valley, the beaches of Malibu, and Yosemite’s granite cliffs. The most popular scent on Soarin' Over California were the orange groves, whose scent became well loved by many guests. Periodically, Disneyland brings back Soarin' Over California to allow guests to once again enjoy this scent and the attraction in it's original form.

The updated version, Soarin' Around the World, takes this concept to a global level, taking guests on an international adventure to locations like the Great Wall of China, the Eiffel Tower, and the savannahs of Africa. Both versions of the Soarin' attraction are celebrated for their immersive technology, which combines soaring visuals with gentle motion and the scents of the environments, creating an experience that makes it feel as though you are truly flying.

Besides the orange groves, several Reddit users described other scents on the Soarin' attraction that are just as pleasant as the orange groves. User marticcrn wrote the best Disneyland smells are “The scents on Soarin ride at California Adventure. You catch just a whiff of flowers when you fly over the Taj Mahal.” Other users talked about the pine trees and grass scents that are also typically used in Soarin'. I personally love each and every scent on both Soarin' Around the World and Soarin' Over California!

The Incredicoaster at Disney California Adventure is a high-speed roller coaster that takes riders on an exhilarating journey with the Parr family from The Incredibles films. Featuring thrilling drops, sharp turns, and loops, it’s also enhanced with special effects, including the iconic smell of freshly baked cookies and the exciting soundtrack that brings the action to life.

The unmistakable scent of freshly baked cookies wafts through the air as riders race along the Incredicoaster at Disney California Adventure. As part of the ride’s immersive experience, this delightful aroma is strategically released during the high-speed sections of the coaster, heightening the thrill and adding another layer to the adventure. The scent is a nod to the Incredibles family's home life, where the smell of homemade cookies is a comforting part of the everyday chaos.

Many Reddit users stated one of the best smells at Disneyland are these cookies! For example, user Kachow-95 stated “I absolutely love the smell of cookies when you are experiencing all of the thrill and excitement of the Incredicoaster!”.

Star Tours Attraction

Star Tours – The Adventures Continue at Disneyland offers an immersive and thrilling journey through the Star Wars universe, combining cutting-edge simulation technology with the excitement of space travel. Guests board the StarSpeeder 1000 and embark on a randomized adventure, soaring through iconic Star Wars locations like Hoth, Tatooine, and the forest moon of Endor, with different storylines each time they ride. Featuring stunning 3D visuals, motion seats, and appearances by beloved characters like C-3PO and R2-D2, the attraction puts visitors right in the middle of the action, making them feel like they’re part of a galaxy far, far away. With multiple possible destinations and surprises on every ride, Star Tours offers a unique experience each time, appealing to both Star Wars fans and thrill-seekers alike.

Interestingly, several Reddit users claimed that the inside of the Star Tours attraction is one of their favorite smells at Disneyland. When user ChewieBee stated that Star Tours was the best Disneyland smell, user Clementinehellos replied with “Yes that plastic smell!”. User framedragged described the inside of Star Tours “like overheating electronics and fabric that's been vacuumed so hard it's staticy.” Although I was surprised to see several people claim this is their favorite smell, let alone this description of the smell, it does seem to be well loved by many Disneyland guests!

Synthetic Main Street Smells

shops on Main Street U.S.A.

As guests enter Disneyland and start their stroll down Main Street, they are greeted by the warm and comforting smell of freshly baked goods and popcorn. Combined with the earthy scent of freshly cut grass and the faint aroma of horse-drawn carriages, the fragrance of Main Street captures the true Disneyland essence. This unique blend of smells on Main Street, carefully designed to enhance the park's immersive atmosphere, is an unforgettable part of the Disneyland experience, making it many guest's favorite smell.

Reddit user coolbeans080 wrote, “Best overall smell? The cookie smell on main street. Super nostalgic for me.” I can definitely see how the cookie smell on Main Street brings an overwhelming sense of nostalgia, comfort, and overall happiness to be in the Happiest Place on Earth.

Although I also love the smells on Main Street, one thing you may not want to know about Disneyland is that some of these smells are actually pumped out synthetically. Some of these smells even correlate with the seasons – for example, you may notice extra scents of peppermint or vanilla during Christmas while walking down Main Street.

Popcorn Throughout the Park

Disneyland popcorn is a beloved snack that has become an iconic part of the park experience. The irresistible, freshly popped kernels are known for their deliciously buttery taste and are often served in signature buckets, making them both a treat and a souvenir. With multiple popcorn stands scattered throughout the park, the warm, salty goodness is never far away, offering a comforting snack to enjoy while exploring Disneyland’s attractions. Whether you’re savoring it during a parade or taking a break from the rides, Disneyland popcorn adds to the unique experience of the park and is a must-have for many visitors.

Several Reddit users agreed that the smell of popcorn is their absolute favorite smell at Disneyland. Reddit user jillianne1979 wrote “The popcorn smells so good. I've never eaten it but the smell is so good.” User mknaub even wrote “The popcorn smells way better than it tastes.” Although I do think the popcorn at Disneyland tastes great, the smell is what makes it extra delicious! I was not surprised to read that many users said the popcorn was the best smell at Disneyland.

Churro Stands

Disneyland churros

Disneyland churros are a quintessential treat that has become a fan favorite at the park. These warm, cinnamon-sugar-coated pastries are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, offering the perfect balance of sweet and comforting flavors. Sold at numerous stands throughout Disneyland, churros are often enjoyed as a quick snack while exploring the park’s attractions. The scent of fresh churros often fills the air, tempting guests to indulge in the classic Disneyland experience. Available in a variety of seasonal and themed flavors, Disneyland churros offer a delicious way to enhance the magic of a day at the park, making them a must-try for all Disneyland guests.

Although several Reddit users agreed that churros were one of the best Disneyland smells, I loved how user Derfargin phrased their reasoning. They wrote “the churro cart when it gets dark and it's cool out” is their favorite Disneyland smell. I loved this description especially because I agree that churros smell even more amazing when it's dark and cool outside. Nothing tastes better than a warm and fresh churro while you walk around Disneyland on a cool evening.

Indiana Jones Adventure Attraction

Indiana Jones Adventure queue

Inspired by the Indiana Jones film series, the Indiana Jones Adventure attraction at Disneyland is an exhilarating journey to uncover the secrets of the cursed Temple of the Forbidden Eye. Along the way, guests encounter obstacles like fiery traps, giant rolling boulders, and terrifying snakes, all while trying to avoid the wrath of the temple’s ancient deity, Mara. It is one of the most popular attractions at Disneyland for good reason!

Surprisingly, several Reddit users claimed the inside of the Indiana Jones Adventure queue and attraction has the best smells at Disneyland. User GucciRubberDruck wrote that their favorite Disneyland smell is “The smell in Indiana Jones. I don't know why or what exactly it smells like but I love it.” Reddit user MycroftNext also wrote “I don’t know if they scent it or if it really is just a natural smell from being closed in, but it really makes me feel like I’m exploring an old cave as I walk the queue. The dampness, too.” It's pretty amazing to see that many guests not only feel immersed in Disney attractions through the technology and excitement of the ride, but with the scents as well!
