Walt Disney World just extended a major refurbishment, again, for one of its most popular resort hotels. It’s not uncommon to see refurbishments extended, but in the case of this popular Magic Kingdom area resort, this one is taking quite a bit of time.

Disney Extends Contemporary Resort Refurbishment
Walt Disney World has continued to update Disney’s Contemporary Resort following the transformation of its hotel rooms to The Incredibles theme. After those room updates wrapped, additional work resumed throughout the resort, and that refurbishment timeline has now been extended again.

Disney originally scheduled the Contemporary Resort refurbishment to run from September 2024 through September 2025. However, in June 2025, the timeline was updated, extending the project from its planned Summer 2025 completion to a new end date of July 2026.
Now the newest notice posted on Disney’s Contemporary Resort page has extended the refurbishment from September 2024 through late 2027. The notice reads, “Refurbishments will occur in phases throughout select areas of Disney’s Contemporary Resort, including the atrium and Bay Lake Tower. Guests may also see and hear construction during their stay.” This means the refurbishment is now reaching over a 30-month timeframe.
Another notice remains on the page for a refurbishment to amenities taking place January 26, 2026, through early May 2026: “The Bay Cove Pool, the Cove Bar, the water play area and the whirlpool spa at Bay Lake Tower at Disney’s Contemporary Resort will temporarily be closed for maintenance. The Bay Lake Pool, the feature pool, the water play area and the whirlpool spa at Disney’s Contemporary Resort will remain open for Guests to enjoy.”
Disney’s Contemporary Resort is an older Disney World hotel, and it’s clear that the work being done is requiring more time than Disney originally predicted.
The Incredibles Themed Rooms at Contemporary Resort
One of the most notable refurbishments to Disney’s Contemporary Resort has been the upgraded rooms to The Incredibles theming. This retheme was a large improvement to the resort, which is often criticized for its lack of Disney theming, despite the presence of a Disney monorail in the main building. This Disney resort hotel is often called the “Marriott” of Disney hotels since the theming is a bit too reflective of its role as a convention center hotel.
Adding The Incredibles to the room themes is a big improvement in this area, which helps add a bit more of a Disney touch to the resort hotel rooms. While this refurbishment is inconvenient, we did not notice any large disturbances to the hotel itself during our most recent stay during the first few days of December 2025. Despite the length of this refurbishment, the impact on guest experience was minimal in our recent experience at the resort.
