Disney leadership continually evaluates theme park guests’ experience and occasionally introduces adjustments or changes to policies or adjustments to rules as a means to improve guest satisfaction, safety, revenue, or another metric. This is arguably truer now than ever before, as newly installed executives are settling into their roles following a sweeping org chart change across Disney earlier this year. We recently spoke with the new Disneyland president about upcoming expansion at Disneyland. Today, though, we turn to recent policy changes.
In this story, we’ll break down 9 rule changes that have been implemented at Disneyland Resort in California and/or Walt Disney World in Florida so far in 2026. Mickey Visit brings you the latest Disney news and planning resources, including theme park shuttles added to more hotels near Disneyland and how Disney World’s Villains Land might be scarier than guests expect.

DVC Point Rental
Some Disney Vacation Club (DVC) members have used a workaround for booking known as “reservation walking.” With this strategy, guests booked a resort reservation earlier than the dates they actually wanted and then continued to modify the reservation forward as the booking window advanced.

Reservation walking has been known as a controversial advantage, allowing members to sneakily book up to 7 nights, then modify the reservation 1 day at a time to secure highly competitive rooms and dates before other members.
As of September 2026, Disney implemented restrictions that do not allow DVC members to modify reservations in this way. See more about this and other DVC crackdowns.
No More Time Limit for Park Hopping
Guests visiting Disneyland Resort with a park hopper ticket or a Magic Key annual pass can switch between Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure at their leisure.
Previously, these guests had to wait until 11:00 AM to switch parks from whichever location they began their day. In June 2026, Disney removed this restriction, and guests can now park hop as early as they’d like.
The one caveat is they must spend at least 15 minutes in the first park they visit, but we can’t imagine any situation in which that bylaw would truly impact someone’s plans.

Enforcement of Wedding Photos Rule

Walt Disney World offers Disney Fine Art Photography Park Portrait Sessions exclusively for married couples who tied the knot through Disney Fairy Tale Weddings. These photo sessions can cost up to nearly $5,000.
Disney has had a standing rule saying that these sessions must take place within one year of the couple’s wedding, but the company seldom enforced this. This changed earlier this year, much to the frustration of couples who thought Disney would be lenient with their time range.
Disney shared with us that they are working with couples on a case-by-case basis who were directly impacted by this rule change. See details about this situation.
No More Penalty for Magic Key No-Shows
As Disneyland Resort guests who have a Magic Key annual pass plan their visits, they are required to make a reservation for the park they’re attending. If Magic Key holders did not show up on their reserved date 3 times, Disneyland previously inflicted a 30-day penalty on the guest making or modifying any additional park reservations.
As of October 7, 2026, Disney stopped enforcing the no-show penalty. Park reservations are still in place, and Disneyland officials tell us these are still an important tool in preparing for each day, but there is no longer a penalty for Magic Key holders who don’t cancel their reservations.

Gift Card Storage Option and Location Changes
Disney Gift Cards can be used to purchase almost anything at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World, including park tickets, merchandise, and food. Guests have long been able to use Disney Gift Cards electronically, via the Disneyland app in California or the My Disney Experience app in Florida, but those apps weren’t able to save the gift card information from purchase to purchase. This meant the guest had to input the 16-digit gift card code every time they used the gift card.
In June 2026, Disney removed this limitation, and Disney Gift Cards can now be saved directly in Disney’s apps to use across multiple purchases. This saves guests a ton of time! See how to save your Disney Gift Card to your app.
Disney Gift Cards are valid at most locations throughout the parks, but some third-party-owned stores don’t accept them. In August 2026, additional stores at Disney Springs at Disney World stopped accepting Disney Gift Cards as payment methods. These locations include Vera Bradley and Zara. See more information here.
Early Entry Replaced with Lightning Lane Perk
Guests staying at the 3 official Disneyland Resort hotels receive perks not available to other guests. See the perks offered this month. Previously, Disney overnight guests received access to one of the theme parks, Disneyland Park or Disney California Adventure, 30 minutes earlier than other guests every day.
In January 2026, Disney removed early entry at both Disneyland Resort parks. In early entry’s absence, hotel guests receive a free Lightning Lane reservation to an attraction of their choice. This perk applies to all guests staying at Disneyland Hotel, Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, and Pixar Place Hotel.
See the details about the free Lightning Lane perk.
Free Water Park Only During Select Dates
In 2025, Walt Disney World offered free water park admission to all guests staying at any official Disney hotel on their check-in day. This free ticket was valid for either Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon or Disney’s Blizzard Beach, depending on the parks’ schedules. Disney offered this perk year-round that year.
In 2026, the perk only returned for the summer, being valid between May 26 and September 8. The same will be true for 2027, but Disney has not announced exact summer dates yet.
Eligibility Change for Disney College Program
The Disney College Program is Walt Disney World’s semester-long internship. Participants live in Disney-provided housing and work in the parks and hotels to earn college credit.
In a change for the spring 2027 semester, if applicants have already graduated from college, they must have done so no more than 12 months before the application launch date, which was August 17, 2026.
This is a big change from previous semesters, which allowed applicants who graduated college up to 24 months before the application launch date. The switch to 12 months is a return to a previous policy. The 24-month rule was introduced when the Disney College Program was reinstated following its pandemic-era break, since a large number of students would have missed out on being able to participate in the Program otherwise at that time.
See more eligibility requirements for the Disney College Program.
Discounts Removed and Added
Bottled water and bottled soda sold at outdoor vending carts throughout Disneyland and Walt Disney World are not valid for any discounts to annual passholders, Disney Vacation Club members, or Disney Visa Card holders. Previously, guests belonging to those groups could work around this limitation by purchasing bottled water and bottled soda at indoor merchandise locations, where their discount was valid.
As of October 2026, this discount loophole is no longer available. While guests with Disney privileges can still receive discounts on most merchandise, bottled beverages are now excluded from discounts, even at indoor stores. See more details about this change.
On the other side of things, Disney added more locations where Disney Visa Card holders can receive discounts at both Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World. These include the popular restaurants 1900 Park Fare and Cítricos. See the full list of eligible discount locations.
