Disney’s first suspended roller coaster, themed to Monsters, Inc., will be joining classics like Space Mountain and new favorites like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind in Walt Disney World‘s roller coaster roster. Fans have been clamoring for this specific coaster for 25 years now, and Walt Disney Imagineering is finally building the ride that guests have been waiting for.
This highly anticipated Disney World addition just reached an important milestone on the road toward its grand opening. We have photos of this significant moment in Disney history and insight from our recent tour of the construction site. Mickey Visit brings you the latest Disney news and planning resources, including a big change for Disney gift cards and Disney’s test of a new way to find merchandise to improve the guest experience.
Monsters, Inc. Doors Coaster Milestone

Construction is ongoing at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World for Monstropolis, a new land based on the Pixar film Monsters, Inc.
Ever since the movie was released in 2001, many fans have dreamed of Disney building a ride inspired by Mike and Sulley’s chase through the factory door vault. Disney is building that ride! The indoor suspended roller coaster, in which riders sit under the track, will be the centerpiece attraction of Monstropolis. Disney has not announced a name for the coaster or an opening date.

Construction has been underway for over a year now, with workers transforming an area of the cast member parking lot into a high-profile Disney attraction. So far, most of this work has pertained to the future building’s foundation and infrastructure.

In June 2026, though, the Monsters, Inc. ride reached a significant milestone as its first piece of roller coaster track was put into place.

Photographer @bioreconstruct even captured the exact moment when construction workers lifted the track piece off the ground!
In the coming months, we’re excited to see the next Disney World roller coaster take shape. It seems as if Disney will build the track, then enclose the building after all the track pieces are in place.
We got a sneak peek of the ride layout in the form of a concept model during D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event 2024. This may or may not reflect the final design of the coaster. With the next D23 just around the corner in August 2026, we expect Disney to reveal new details.

Aside from the coaster, which physically expands the footprint of Disney’s Hollywood Studios, the rest of Monstropolis will be located in the area of the park formerly known as Muppets Courtyard. The previous Muppet*Vision 3D theater will become a new venue called The Glob, home to an indoor show. The defunct Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano will be transformed into Harryhausen’s, a restaurant seen in Monsters, Inc.
We recently went behind the Monstropolis construction walls with the Imagineers for a hardhat tour to see how things are progressing. Imagineers shared that so many details will be part of Monstropolis to truly make it feel like a lived-in community, even more than the original movie. Learn more insight from our hardhat tour with Imagineers here.

Roller coasters have been an increasing focus for Disney World, with two new builds opening in the past four years alone. Those were Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at EPCOT and TRON Lightcycle / Run at Magic Kingdom. This year, the resort also reopened Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Magic Kingdom after over a year of work, including new track, as well as permanently reimagined Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith at Disney’s Hollywood Studios into Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets.
Including the upcoming Monstropolis coaster, that makes 10 total coasters at Disney World theme parks.

Concept art for the upcoming Villains Land at Magic Kingdom also vaguely depicts a Maleficent-themed coaster, but Disney hasn’t officially revealed any specific attractions for Villains Land yet.
Disney World’s other expansions in progress are the new Tropical Americas land with Encanto and Indiana Jones rides at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and Piston Peak National Park with Cars rides at Magic Kingdom.
