They shared that as part of the process, they would need to go through the process of obtaining DMV approval to join the Special License Plate Program once 7,500 people joined the pre-order interest list. We immediately signed up for this, and we have now received an email with an update on the status of the project. The email shares that due to the significant interest in this offering, they have moved forward with the next steps of submitting the application package to the DMV.

“Thank you again for your interest in the Disneyland License Plate Benefiting Children’s Hospitals.

We are excited to share that because of the tremendous interest you’ve all shown for this program, we have submitted the application package for this new specialized license plate to the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). This marks an important milestone in the process of bringing a Disneyland-themed specialized license plate to California drivers while supporting children’s hospitals throughout the state.

Over the coming months, the application will move through the DMV review and approval process. We will continue to provide updates as new developments occur, including information about next steps, timelines, and eventually how to place and pay for an official preorder once the license plate is authorized to move forward.

We sincerely appreciate your enthusiasm for our effort to find new ways of supporting our children’s hospitals and the families and communities for whom they care. The strong response we have received so far has been incredible, and we look forward to sharing more updates with you soon.

The email then takes you to the link that you can use to join the interest list. This is the step you should take if you would like to get all of the latest updates on the project’s status and eventually get one of these license plates.

The submission of the application package is the first of a few different milestones, which they previously shared would include the application approval, design reveal, preorder kickoff campaign, and events at participating hospitals.

We know that specialized plates will cost $50 for sequential and $103 for personalized (plus a nonrefundable credit card processing fee), with an annual renewal fee of $40 or $83 in addition to standard vehicle registration fees.

The revenue from these plates will be given to a program fund dedicated to essential healthcare services and programs, distributed to 13 children’s hospitals in California. See the list of hospitals below.

  • Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford
  • MemorialCare Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach
  • Rady Children’s Health Orange County
  • Rady Children’s Health San Diego
  • UC Davis Children’s Hospital
  • UC Irvine Health Children’s Hospital
  • UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital
  • UC San Diego Health Children’s Hospital
  • UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland
  • UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital San Francisco
  • Valley Children’s Hospital

The original news release shared by the California State Treasurer’s Office stated that “the program is being designed to support essential but uncompensated healthcare services and programs, such as certain personnel and clinical education costs as well as patient- and family-centered support services that support children’s care, recovery, and well-being.”

We anticipate that the license plates will be similar to the specialty ones for Florida drivers from a few years ago. The proceeds from those plates supported Make-A-Wish Central and Northern Florida. The plate featured a Cinderella Castle design on top of a blue gradient with pixie dust, as seen below.
