Disneyland Resort regularly closes rides to perform routine maintenance, but sometimes upkeep can take place without needing to close an attraction. This helps maintain the park’s capacity for the number of guests it can funnel through rides, albeit with a minor impact on the ride experience.
A portion of a classic Disneyland ride is currently closed to guests as Disney makes changes, but the ride itself remains open. We have details on what Disney is changing behind the scenes. Mickey Visit brings you the latest Disney news and planning resources, including Disney executives’ plans for AI in the parks and a Disneyland Magic Key upgrade for $25.

Portion of Disneyland Railroad Route Now Closed

The Disneyland Railroad’s “grand circle tour” of Walt Disney’s original theme park is mostly outdoors, but contains a brief indoor segment.
Between the Tomorrowland and Main Street, U.S.A., stations, the Disneyland Railroad passes through a tunnel that showcases two scenic dioramas. The first depicts the Grand Canyon, complete with static figures of bobcats, birds, and goats. The next diorama, titled Primeval World, features Audio-Animatronics dinosaurs, which were originally part of the Ford Magic Skyway ride, which Disney built for the 1964-1965 New York World’s Fair.

Last month, Disneyland filed a permit with the City of Anaheim for work on these dioramas. According to the permits, in the Grand Canyon scene, Disney intends to replace the lighting with LED fixtures and install new controls and equipment out of guest view. In the Primeval World scene, plans to add new rockwork and fall protection, and to replace the lighting.
Work is now underway on this multi-phase update, with impacts to guests riding the Disneyland Railroad. The Grand Canyon scene is currently blocked off. A black scrim covers the glass window that would ordinarily provide a view into the diorama. Disney added 2D cutouts of various woodland animals to the glass in their place, as seen in a post by @ThemeParkIQ on X:

The Primeval World scene remains visible for now, but Disney will eventually proceed with work on that set, too. It remains to be seen if crews will wait until the Grand Canyon portion is finished before moving on to Primeval World.
Disneyland Railroad remains open during the work, with the entirety of its circular route still in place.
More Changes to Classic Disney Rides
Walt Disney Imagineering approaches the restorations of classic rides in the Disney theme parks with great care, as they shared with Mickey Visit during a media presentation recently.
Keeping up older favorites to the standards of modern rides is a priority for Disney, whether through a relatively small project like the Disneyland Railroad dioramas or the huge changes coming to Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress in Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World. Incidentally, Carousel of Progress also first debuted at the 1964-1965 New York World’s Fair, just like the Primeval World dinosaurs.
Also on the East Coast, Imagineering and its attractions and operations partners recently debuted sleek upgrades to Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
At Disneyland, concentrated efforts are underway to expand seating areas for guests within the parks and perform routine ride maintenance on several attractions currently closed, including Pirates of the Caribbean. We track all Disneyland refurbishments here.
