He is seeking damages exceeding $50,000 due to allegations that he was bitten numerous times by cimicidae, also known as bedbugs. The lawsuit alleges that Disney failed to inspect its hotel rooms and take required steps to prevent bedbugs.
The lawsuit states, “As a direct and proximate result of Defendant’s negligence, Plaintiff, David Besse, suffered scarring, bodily injury, pain and suffering, disability, mental anguish, loss of the capacity for the enjoyment of life, medical expenses, loss of earnings, loss of the ability to earn money, financial loss, and property damage. The losses are either permanent or continuing, and Plaintiff will suffer the losses in the future.”
For those unfamiliar, bedbugs are small, wingless insects that feed on blood from humans and other animals. These insects tend to hide in habitual places like mattresses, box springs, bed frames, and headboards. The reason why the issue of bedbugs comes up so often in relation to hotels is that hotels have a constant flow of travelers bringing luggage, clothing, and personal items from all over the world. Each new guest is a new potential carrier.
Hotels prevent bedbugs by checking high-risk areas every time a room turns over. That includes mattress seams, box springs, headboards, and upholstered furniture. Laundry is washed and dried with high levels of heat, which kills all life stages of bedbugs.
