Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph Ride Opening Date & New Space Mountain Overhaul Revealed For Tokyo

Disney occasionally overhauls some of its theme parks’ older attractions, and these makeovers can range from subtle to extreme. Earlier this year, for example, Disney updated the Audio-Animatronics figures on Frozen Ever After at EPCOT, a somewhat subtle change that only required the ride to be closed for a few weeks. On the extreme side, the DINOSAUR ride permanently closed at Disney’s Animal Kingdom last February, and Disney is currently transforming it into an Indiana Jones attraction, to open in 2027. Disney just shared news of additional overhauls for another park.

Disney revealed the opening date of the Wreck-It Ralph ride and details for the new Space Mountain, both coming to Tokyo Disneyland and representing significant transformations of their predecessors. We have details on the new attractions, including what will be a first for Space Mountain. Mickey Visit brings you the latest Disney news and planning resources, including Hallmark’s first-ever Disney World Christmas movie debuting and limited-time Disney Vacation Club discounts.

Sugar Rush: Sweet Rescue

Sugar Rush: Sweet Rescue is the name of Disney’s first-ever ride based on the 2012 movie Wreck-It Ralph, coming to Tokyo Disneyland.

To create this new attraction, Walt Disney Imagineering is overhauling the former ride system of Buzz Lightyear’s Astro Blasters, which permanently closed in 2024 at this park. Sugar Rush will retain the previous attraction’s setup of a slow-moving ride in which guests use blasters to score points.

Just announced, Sugar Rush: Sweet Rescue will open on April 15, 2027. The poster artwork above was also revealed.

Disney shared a new official synopsis for the storyline of Sugar Rush: Sweet Rescue:

“King Candy, who is plotting to take over the world of video games, has set his sights on Sugar Rush, a candy-themed racing game. He has transformed the confections throughout the world of Sugar Rush, including gumdrops and ice cream, into Sugar Bugs programmed to consume the entire kingdom.

Guests will enter the colorful world of the game and join forces with Ralph, Vanellope, and their friends as they travel through a variety of scenes, working to restore the Sugar Bugs to their original ‘kawaii’ forms before they can destroy the candy-filled world.”

King Candy is my favorite Disney Villain, and I love that he’s returning for this ride! Here’s hoping he might also make an appearance in Villains Land at Magic Kingdom.

The ride will contain new music composed by Henry Jackman, who scored the Wreck-It Ralph movie.

To celebrate the ride, a new, tart popcorn flavor called Sugar-Lime will be sold throughout Tokyo Disneyland.

Tokyo Disneyland will build up to the April 15 grand opening of Sugar Rush: Sweet Rescue with Wreck-It Ralph decorations throughout Tomorrowland starting on February 18 and a projection-mapping moment inspired by the ride on Cinderella Castle starting March 18.

Space Mountain: Earthrise

Space Mountain: Earthrise is the name of the overhauled Space Mountain attraction coming to Tokyo Disneyland. “Overhaul” might actually be underplaying the situation in this case. Disney completely demolished Tokyo’s original Space Mountain and built a new one from scratch.

Just confirmed by Disney, Space Mountain: Earthrise will utilize “a newly developed ride system.” No other details have been shared, but this is exciting news for Disney roller coaster fans. This means Space Mountain: Earthrise won’t be a copy-and-paste of an existing Disney theme park coaster, but will instead showcase something new. We look forward to hearing more details about this ride system in the future, especially considering Disney eventually repurposes new ride systems for multiple attractions around the world.

Disney has not announced an opening date for Space Mountain: Earthrise, but it will be sometime after Sugar Rush: Sweet Rescue.

“It’s not only a whole new ride experience, but the story also has so much emotion,” said Walt Disney Imagineering Producer Kathleen Davis when the project was first announced in 2022. “Through the queue and then on the ride, we see our connection to our planet and gain a new perspective for how special it is in all the universe. It’s a roller coaster with both thrill and heart.”

Sugar Rush: Sweet Rescue and Space Mountain: Earthrises are just a few of the many new experiences under construction at Disney theme parks globally. See 22 new rides Disney is building.
