Are Voodoo Doughnuts Worth the Hype? – Universal Orlando Review

Voodoo Doughnuts are a popular doughnut shop offering more than 50 types of doughnuts with humorous names and themes. These comedic and highly decorated shops are a staple in both Universal Orlando and Universal Studios Hollywood. Our Voodoo Doughnuts review covers what the hype is about Voodoo Doughnuts.

Some of the most popular doughnuts offered include the original Bacon Maple Bar, the Dirt Doughnut, Memphis Mafia, and the Voodoo Doll doughnut.

What is so special about Voodoo Doughnuts?Voodoo Doughnuts Worth It

Voodoo Doughnuts are known for the humorous and themed doughnuts options, wild decor, and merchandise. But they’re more than just a novelty, the doughnuts themselves are baked fresh each day and are delicious. I would consider myself a bit of a doughnuts lover (Homer Simpson and I have a lot in common there!) and these are some of the best doughnuts I’ve ever had. The theming of Voodoo Doughnuts makes it a fun place to stop when visiting either Universal theme park. Or if you’re lucky enough to have a location in your area.

Which is the original Voodoo Doughnuts?

The original Voodoo Doughnuts opened its first location in 2003 in Portland, OR. Currently, they have 13 locations in six states including one at the City Walk in Universal Orlando and Universal Studios Hollywood.

What is the most popular Voodoo Doughnut?Voodoo Doughnuts Review

The signature doughnuts is hands down the Voodoo Doll doughnuts which looks like a voodoo doll with a pretzel stuck into the center. This doughnuts is a raised yeast doughnut filled with raspberry jelly topped with chocolate frosting and a pretzel stake. I’d be remiss to not mention this well-known item when writing a Voodoo Doughnuts review.

We ordered it due to its iconic status but it was delicious, especially if you like jam filled doughnuts.

If you are a big sweets person or just love doughnuts, absolutely. The atmosphere of Voodoo Doughnuts is also fun to take in at Universal Orlando and since it’s accessible on City Walk you don’t need a park ticket to go there. If you are planning a day at Universal Orlando or just enjoying an evening on City Walk, it’s worth the time to stop in.

There is also a photo op offered at both Universal Voodoo Doughnuts locations which is a large doughnuts chair right outside the front. This photo op is extremely popular so you will even see a short line for it!

We enjoyed Voodoo Doughnuts twice on our trip to Universal Orlando and easily avoided long lines for the first stop because we arrived to City Walk so early in the morning. I didn’t make this stop primarily for the Voodoo Doughnuts review- this was already a planned stop on our list! Since we arrived over an hour before the parks opened, there was hardly a line and we were able to walk right in the shop. If you want to avoid a long line, arriving to the City Walk before park open is a good way to ensure you can get your doughnuts with no line.

Display Case at Universal Orlando

Voodoo Doughnuts at Universal Orlando also offers a mobile order option so you can order your donuts via the Universal Orlando app and pick them up at a mobile cart across the store. We used this option when writing my Voodoo Doughnuts review on our way out of Universal Orlando and were able to just hang out on a nearby bench until our order was ready and avoid the long line wrapping around the store.

For our Voodoo Doughnuts review we tried quite a few of the most popular doughnuts including the Voodoo Doll, Miami Viceberry, Grape Ape, Oh Captain, My Captain, and the Homer. My son loved the Oh Captain, My Captain due to its inclusion of Captain Crunch cereal on top! My favorite was the Grape Ape which is a raised ring with vanilla frosting, grape dust, and purple sprinkles. All our donuts were incredibly fresh and fluffy. We gladly took a box back to our hotel to enjoy for breakfast for a few days.

It was a memorable stop for us and we gladly enjoyed taking some back to our hotel. The decor inside the doughnut shop is fun to look at and there’s a variety of merchandise that is worth checking out. You don’t have to wait in the same line for doughnuts if you want to just go in and look at the merchandise so keep that in mind too.

Overall, our vote is that Voodoo Doughnuts is worth the hype! I hope my Voodoo Doughnuts review persuaded you to take the time to try on your next trip.
