Universal Hollywood Reopening After Wildfires Closure, Disneyland Fires Impact Update & Fire Relief Discounts

As wildfires continue to burn across Los Angeles County this week, Universal Studios Hollywood has been closed for the past two days due to extreme winds and fire conditions. We now have news that the park is reopening today, as well as a look at how the fires are affecting Disneyland right now.

Several wildfires are burning in Los Angeles, including the Palisades fire which has burned over 20,000 acres at the time of writing. Our thoughts are with all of those who have lost their homes and communities to these horrible fires and with the firefighters who have been fighting tirelessly to contain them.

We will share an update on the impact of the Los Angeles fires on Disneyland and Universal Studios Hollywood below. Our hearts remain with the first responders who are working tirelessly to protect the community and get these fires put out.

Universal Studios Hollywood Reopening

After having been closed for two days due to the Los Angeles fires, Universal Studios Hollywood is now reopening. Universal Studios Hollywood shared this update on X: “Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal CityWalk will be open on Friday, January 10 and will resume regular operating hours.”

The active fires in Los Angeles are the Palisades fire which has burned 20,438 acres at the time of writing (8% contained), the Eaton fire near Altadena and Pasadena which has burned 13,690 acres (3% contained), the Kenneth fire in West Hills which has burned 1,000 acres (35% contained), the Hurst fire in Sylmar which burned 771 acres (37% contained), and the Lidia fire near Acton which has burned 395 acres (75% contained).

You can see Universal Studios Hollywood's position in relation to the fires on a map via Watch Duty below.

Universal Studios Hollywood is much closer than Disneyland to the fires, and Disneyland is not in the area currently threatened.

Disneyland Fire Relief Discounts and Fires Impact

At the time of writing, there are some Severe Weather warnings for Disneyland including a Red Flag Warning and Air Quality Alert. You can see the current weather for the Disneyland Resort below. As we mentioned yesterday, it's a bit surreal to see blue skies here while the fires are still burning in Los Angeles.

Disneyland Resort weather Los Angeles fires

The biggest impacts right now are on some that rides may close due to the high winds in Disney California Adventure especially (like Golden Zephyr and potentially Silly Symphony Swings), and we may also see the fireworks show and World of Color canceled in the evenings.

We have reports on the ground at Disneyland that it's clear and sunny and crowds are lower than expected. The current air quality is 56 which is considered moderate and is close to a rate that you could experience on a normal day in Los Angeles. No smoke has been smelled in the air and the air quality metrics currently reflect that. The severe weather warning is in relation to the proximity to the fire but there hasn't been any smoke in the area.

I've also seen on social media that people are escaping from Los Angeles to Disneyland. It's providing relief and a place for them to stay. For those impacted, there are discounted rates being offered from both the official Disney hotels and the a number of the hotels surrounding Disneyland. You can see a resource from Visit Anaheim of all the hotel discounts being offered to those impacted by the fires.

We'll continue to monitor the situation at Disneyland and provide updates for those who are considering trips in the coming weeks. It is far too soon to make decisions about cancelling trips next week and beyond.
