New Patent Reveals Potential Features of Star Wars Resort Hotel Rooms

For Disney, the entertainment doesn't end when you leave their theme parks: a patent filed today by Disney revealed that the company is working on a “Multimedia System for Transforming Any Room Into A Show Room.” The patent documents emphasized hotel rooms in their descriptions of how the system would be used, suggesting that Disney resorts like Walt Disney World‘s upcoming Star Warts hotel could feature immersive technology that takes an ordinary hotel room to the next level with interactive storytelling techniques.

“Conventional thinking in the hotel industry has been that it is desirable to make their guest very comfortable while they sleep but to otherwise encourage their guests to leave their room to partake in entertaining activities such as shopping and dining on-site or elsewhere in a resort or nearby city,” the patent said.

Disney has already said that the Star Wars hotel promises to be its most immersive hotel experience yet.

According to Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Bob Chapek, the new hotel would be seamlessly connected to the Hollywood Studios' Star Wars: Galaxy Edge, a new land slated to open in 2019.

“This first-of-its-kind resort will combine luxury with complete immersion into an authentic Star Wars story,” the Disney Parks blog said. “Guests’ journey through space will start when everyone departs together for a multiday Stars Wars adventure by boarding a starship alive with characters and stories that unfold all around them during a voyage through the galaxy.”

Animated renderings of the Star Warts hotel rooms also reveal that each room will feature a viewing window looking directly into space — it seems likely that Walt Disney World would take their hotel to the next level with multimedia interactive experiences.

Although the patent is no guarantee that the technology will be used in Disney resorts, the company is already taking a creative approach to developing hotel endeavors that go beyond being just a place to sleep — for Disney, staying in a Disney Hotel is an attraction of its own.
