One of our biggest complaints about Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge is how much the strict timeline limits the land from embracing other popular characters in the Star Wars universe.
We've seen the grip on that timeline slowly begin to shift with the inclusion of popular characters like Mandalorian and Grogu in Disneyland. This improvement helps to fix the biggest problem with the land.
Now Disney is taking it a step forward and adding a NEW mission to Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run.

Mandalorian and Grogu Storyline Mission
In conjunction with “The Mandalorian and Grogu” movie coming to theaters in 2026, Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge will get a brand-new story!
A new mission is coming to Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run featuring Mandolorian and Grogu! Because of the new partnership with Disney and Epic Games, the team at Lucasfilm has used Epic's Unreal Engine to create virtual sets. This collaboration of technology will allow this new mission to come to the Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run!
Guests will soar “alongside Mando and Grogu on thrilling, and dangerous, missions” on the Millennium Falcon according to Star Wars creative executive Dave Filoni. This new mission will debut in 2026 alongside the new film.
This is a good sign that we're seeing Disney continue to loosen the reigns on the strict timeline in Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. This news is something that we predicted when looking forward at the expected D23 theme park announcements.
In that article, we wrote: “Let’s scrap the mundane hunt for batteries that the Millennium Falcon currently sends us on and instead let guests be dispatched to help Luke blow up the Death Star. This would be something that wouldn’t take that long to install that would immediately shoot that ride up our favorites list. Then you would have one ride representing the new stories in Rise of the Resistance and another ride taking guests into their favorite original trilogy.”
Now, Disney didn't quite go that far, but it does seem like they are going to get rid of the mundane nature of the current ride which sends guests looking for batteries. Within the concept artwork you can see a battle sequence and Baby Yoda on screen. This looks like far more fun than the current mission.
In our predictions we said that we hoped Disney would fully “fix” Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge by breaking the timeline completely. We wanted and still do want to see the original trilogy characters walking within the land. It may be that someone at Disney wants to keep the land focused on the new trilogy, but it is more likely that they want to keep the land focused on the aspects of Star Wars that are related to the new films thus helping to cross-promote. There is still a huge missed opportunity here to take advantage of the love of the original trilogy. Again, turning to that prediction post we wrote “There are plenty of people who might not connect with the new Rey and Kylo Ren stories but who love Luke, Leia, and Darth Vader. Disney knows this as they see the demand for the Star Wars Nites classic characters.”
We will have to wait and see if any of that comes to fruition. Here's hoping that Disney pays attention to the demand.
