The story of the Mandalorian and Grogu (fondly referred to as “baby Yoda”) has stolen the hearts of fans since the first season of The Mandalorian in 2019. Since that time, the pair has become a favorite in the Star Wars universe, with the Mandalorian and Grogu even making regular appearances as characters at Galaxy's Edge.
The Mandalorian show has run for three seasons, and now, it has been announced that Grogu and the Mandalorian will be coming to the big screen!
“I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created. The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting,” Favreau shared.

“The Mandalorian & Grogu” Coming to the Big Screen
This new Star Wars feature film will begin production in 2024. It will be directed by Jon Favreau, and produced by Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy and Dave Filoni. No release date has been given for the new Baby Yoda movie.
This news comes shortly after Dave Filoni, one of the key creatives for the show, was promoted to Lucasfilm's Chief Creative Officer. Many fans are excited about this move given Filoni's work on several beloved Star Wars stories, including the recent first season of the Disney+ show Ahsoka (and the upcoming Ahsoka season 2 in the works).
The Mandalorian and Grogu started their journey in season one of The Mandalorian, which now has run for three seasons. Season 3 premiered in March of 2023, and it hasn't yet been confirmed when Season 4 will debut. We can assume that this story will take place between seasons of The Mandalorian, which recently welcomed the larger presence of Bo-Katan Kryze in its third season as the Mandalorians united to retake Mandalore. The season ended on a promising note with Din Djarin adopting Grogu so that he could take him on as an apprentice, so we can assume that the story will revolve around the adventures that ensue.

Kathleen Kennedy, President of Lucasfilm, said, “Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen.”
“The Mandalorian & Grogu” will lead Lucasfilm's feature-development slate, including films led by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold, and Dave Filoni, in addition to those in the works.
We're so excited to see the continuation of this beloved pair's story in the Star Wars universe!
