Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout! is a reimagining of The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror that opened in 2017 and has captured the hearts of fans ever since as one of the best Disneyland rides. The drop ride has quite a different tone than its predecessor and takes guests on a high-energy, music-filled mission to help break the Guardians of the Galaxy out of the clutches of the Collector. In addition to the ride's fantastic storyline that cleverly incorporates the drop ride system, the music is an integral part of the experience as Rocket plays songs from Quill's Walkman.
On the ride, Rocket sneaks on top of your gantry lift during your tour and blasts the generator control room, freeing all of the cages in the collection, and havoc ensues. The six different drop sequences for the ride are each synced to their own songs and unique mix of scenes. James Gunn, the director of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, suggested some of these.

Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout! Songs
The Guardians of the Galaxy movies are known for their incredible soundtracks. Guardians of the Galaxy – Awesome Mix Vol. 1 includes beloved songs like Blue Swede's “Hooked on a Feeling,” Redbone's “Come and Get Your Love,” Jackson 5's “I Want You Back,” and more. The songs are masterfully chosen to underscore the action of the scenes they appear in and have become an iconic part of the films.
Naturally, the Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout! Songs continue to underscore the Guardians' escapades with high-energy tunes to immerse riders in the thrill of the story and the action sequences they see in front of them. The music is a major reason why this Avengers Campus ride is so popular and has an infectious positive energy with everyone onboard the gantry lift cheering and grooving during each ride.
The six drop sequences each come with a different song and a different pairing of scenes that will play out for the Guardians. A few core scenes will always be part of the ride, like the start of the ride with Rocket's signature intro spiel (“Yeah, when Rocket unplugs you, and starts things rockin'!”) the generator control room scene, and the final ending scene with the Guardians thanking the guests.
Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout! Full List of Songs
See the full list of the Guardians of the Galaxy Mission Breakout songs below:
- “I Want You Back” by Jackson 5. This is also one of the songs that is featured in the first Guardians of the Galaxy film as mentioned above. In this sequence, the Guardians leap from their cages before Drax gets grabbed by a tentacled creature, and Quill gets attacked by a group of Orloni.
- “Hit Me with Your Best Shot” by Pat Benatar. In this scenario, Quill and Gamora run from a fleet of security drones, then Drax jumps out of a creature's mouth as it lunges towards the gantry lift and punches it on the nose, turning around to the riders and saying “You're welcome!”
- “Give Up the Funk” by Parliament. In this scenario, Quill and Gamora are caught in the grasp of the tentacled monster, then Quill gets attacked by a group of Orloni.
- “Free Ride” by The Edgar Winter Group: In this scenario, the Guardians are fighting off the creatures when Groot turns off the artificial gravity, then Quill yells for Groot to turn the artificial gravity back on as the Guardians are still floating. When he presses the button, everything falls back down (including the gantry lift).
- “Burning Love” by Elvis Presley. In this scenario, the Guardians leap from their cages before Drax gets grabbed by a tentacled creature, then Drax jumps out of a creature's mouth as it lunges towards the gantry lift and punches it on the nose, turning around to the riders and saying “You're welcome!”
- “Born to Be Wild” by Steppenwolf: In this scenario, Quill and Gamora are caught in the grasp of the tentacled monster, then Quill and Gamora run from a fleet of security drones.
No matter which song and drop sequence you get, the attraction remains one of the most thrilling experiences offered at the parks. The possibility of different drop sequences also keeps the ride fresh, as you never know what you are going to get! You can see our Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! ride review for everything you need to know ahead of riding this attraction.
During Halloween at Disneyland, there is a special attraction overlay called Guardians of the Galaxy – Monsters After Dark. The premise is that after the Guardians of the Galaxy have escaped, they accidentally leave Groot behind as all of the scary monsters have broken out of their cages and are still on the loose. For this version of the attraction, there is only one song offered.
- “Monsters After Dark” written by Tyler Bates. In this scenario, Rocket finds Groot, then a Fire Dragon attacks. In the second scene, Rocket is bouncing off of the wall with a flashlight urging riders to distract the Fire Dragon, then Groot waves his arms and Rocket says, “Not you!” In the last scene, the Fire Dragon bursts out of the walls and lunges towards the gantry lift as Rocket and Groot run away.
This popular attraction offers Genie+ Lightning Lanes and is one of the rides we would recommend prioritizing for a 1-Day California Adventure itinerary.
Walt Disney World is also home to a Guardians of the Galaxy-themed attraction. It's an indoor roller coaster called Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind. That ride, which requires a virtual queue or individual lightning lane to ride, also features a specific set of songs with a similar vibe to the Guardians of the Galaxy attraction at Disneyland. You can see our full Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind song list for more details on those!
Best Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout! Songs at Disneyland
We couldn't complete this article without including our top ranking of the best songs from this attraction. Based on our dozens (hundreds?) of rides on this attraction since it opened, we also wanted to share our ranking of the best songs that play during this drop ride.
When the ride car pulls back and the songs start to play we hope that one of our favorites is playing:
- “Hit Me with Your Best Shot” by Pat Benatar
- “Free Ride” by The Edgar Winter Group
- “Burning Love” by Elvis Presley
- “I Want You Back” by Jackson 5
- “Born to Be Wild” by Steppenwolf
- “Give Up the Funk” by Parliament
Generally, I like the songs that bring high energy and immediately kick into the high gear. “Born to Be Wild” and “Give Up the Funk” both still provide backing for awesome ride experiences they are just a little bit slow compared to the others.
