Disneyland Tests Change to Mobile Food Order to Reduce Crowds & Limit Resellers

Disneyland guests can use their phones to order food ahead of their arrival at restaurants. Given this amenity's reliance on technology, Disney occasionally tweaks and tests the service as the demand and use of the service evolve.

Disneyland just tested new features of mobile ordering food within the Disneyland app that may be part of an effort to manage demand and potentially limit guests from abusing the system for popular products. Keep reading to learn how these new limitations worked. Mickey Visit brings you the latest Disney news and planning resources, including a new Disneyland ticket offer and an upcoming free Disney Channel throwback event at Downtown Disney District.

Disneyland Testing Change to Disneyland Mobile Order

new Bluey foods at Disneyland

To order food ahead of time at select quick-service Disneyland restaurants and snack stands, guests can use the Disneyland app. Diners select a restaurant, browse the menu to choose their food, and complete the transaction. At a designated pick-up time, the guests arrive at the restaurant, select the “I'm Here” button in the app, and wait for their order to be ready at a pick-up area.

Disneyland recently tested some slightly modified parameters around mobile ordering for the launch of an anticipated popular menu. This change took place at one location, Troubadour Tavern in Fantasyland at Disneyland Park, home of the new menu of Bluey-themed food and novelties. These launched on March 22 as part of the new Bluey's Best Day Ever! entertainment experience, which has already proven to be an extremely popular addition to the park.

On the day the Bluey experience launched, Disneyland tested this change to mobile ordering, likely in anticipation of huge demand for the special offerings. Normally, guests can perform a mobile order checkout from anywhere, even from home, before they arrive at the park.

During this test, the Disneyland app required guests to be within a certain range of this restaurant's location in order to complete a mobile order. It's unclear what the exact distance required with this update was.

Bluey's Best Day Ever! at Fantasyland Theatre

If a guest attempted a mobile order from beyond the location range, the app populated with a screen that read, “You're Too Far Away | Please move closer to [restaurant name] and try again.”

Additionally, some guests reported the Disneyland app only allowed one mobile order at Troubadour Tavern, per guest, per day. If a guest forgot an item and attempted another purchase, or wanted to eat at Troubadour Tavern twice, they would not be able to use mobile order to do so.

Bingo in new Disneyland Bluey show

Bluey's Best Day Ever! officially debuted at Disneyland Park yesterday to extremely high demand. On the day of its launch, the theaters were packed, and the line for the experience wove through the entirety of Fantasyland all the way near the castle.

We got a sneak peek of the experience as part of a media event hosted by Disney before its official launch. Fantasyland Theatre is transformed into an interactive Bluey-themed area for kids, with live performers and music, as well as themed spaces, activities, foods, and photo ops to explore. The space has ongoing action, including some cute appearances from Bluey and Bingo set to music, songs and games, and more, with kids encouraged to stand up front to participate and interact with the happenings onstage.

In addition to the live entertainment, there is a real-life Fairy Garden and Gnome Village on each side of the theater. Near these spaces, Cast Members set out some activities for kids to participate in between the live entertainment offerings. Kids can also race Barky Boats on the upper level and hop on Bluey’s helicopter stump.

The idea of this concept is that kids have offerings to continuously engage them throughout their time at Fantasyland Theatre. The action onstage ebbs and flows between high-energy and more sentimental moments inspired by the show. There is plenty happening in the space to explore, and it's clear that families are extremely excited about the presence of this beloved show in the park.

new Bluey foods at Disneyland

There are several kid-friendly foods to enjoy at Trubadour Taverne to celebrate the Bluey show, like the new kids' meal combo available for $5.99. When we visited, we tried the Pizza Girls Baked Potato, the Mud Cake Cold Brew, Pavlova Parfait, and Magic “Asparagus” Pretzel. These foods are all inspired by specific episodes from the beloved show. We personally liked these offerings, especially the Pizza Girls Baked Potato and Mud Cake Cold Brew, and many of these items are appealing to younger palates.

There is also a special Bluey sipper and popcorn bucket available featuring character designs and moments from “Bluey.” The sipper features Bluey sitting on top of a cup with a design of Bluey in front Sleeping Beauty Castle.

Given the immense popularity of the series, one reason Disney is changing mobile ordering at Trubadour Tavern is likely to try to get ahead of resellers for this new novelty item…

Getting Ahead of Resellers?

Popcorn buckets

Bulk purchasing and reselling of Disney theme park novelty items like highly popular Disneyland popcorn buckets has become a problem in recent years.

The new limitations to Disneyland's mobile ordering, arriving on the same day as a major new product/menu launch, may indicate a strategy by Disney to crack down on guests manipulating the mobile ordering service.

Using the Bluey menu at Troubadour Tavern as an example, the launch includes a new Bluey sipper, pictured above. Disney already limits that product to two sippers per person, per transaction. The additional limit of only one mobile order per day at Troubadour Tavern potentially prevents a reseller from mobile-ordering over and over.

Disneyland recently removed mobile ordering altogether from several restaurants as well as two of the resort's largest stores.
