Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World is the most popular theme park on the planet. As the crown jewel of Disney's theme park portfolio, Magic Kingdom is an ongoing priority for new additions, enhancements, and technology.
The park is currently in a state of expansion that will introduce a robust slate of new attractions. At the same time, Disney is making major upgrades to classic rides that have been around for decades, and even transforming the most famous theme park building of all time: Cinderella Castle. In this article, we're going to take a look at all of it. At Mickey Visit, we cover the latest Disney news, including a recent Disney DAS update and big company announcements.

1. New Character and Tech Upgrades for Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin
Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, the interactive dark ride in Tomorrowland, closed in August 2025 for a major refurbishment.
This ride first opened in 1998, and since then, it's become noticeably outdated in its technology and in comparison to newer versions of the ride that have since debuted at other Disney theme parks around the globe.

When Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin reopens at Magic Kingdom, the ride vehicles will have handheld blasters. Previously blasters remained stationary on the vehicle's dash, limiting players' mobility of where to aim for the ride's “Z” targets.
The ride vehicles will be equipped with new video monitors that provide real-time scoring updates and other features. The ride vehicles will also be updated with a new design inspired by the colors of Buzz Lightyear and Star Command.

A new scene at the beginning of the ride will introduce Buddy, a new Audio-Animatronics character. She's excited to train you on how to use your blaster before you embark upon your mission. Previously, the first scene of the ride was a disco ball on a pedestal, so this is a significant upgrade.
Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin will reopen on April 8, 2026 at Magic Kingdom.

2. New Track and Special Effects for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad closed in January 2025 for refurbishment. This iconic Magic Kingdom roller coaster has now been closed for over a year. When it finally welcomes riders back into its caverns, the classic flair of the attraction will blend with new effects and general improvements to the ride experience.
For starters, the entire track was removed and replaced with new pieces. This should result in a smoother feel onboard the ride and adhere to modern roller coaster safety standards.

Additionally, during the ride's lift hill scene, the cavern will at first be illuminated in rainbow colors, a nod to Disneyland's defunct Rainbow Caverns attraction. The lighting will then transform into an ominous red glow and reveal bats hanging from the top of the cavern. Imagineers shared more details about this new scene with us last year.
Disney also teased that there will be “more new magic” when the ride returns that's yet to be revealed.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will reopen sometime in early May 2026 at Magic Kingdom. Disney has not announced an exact reopening date.
3. Cinderella Castle's New Paint Makeover

Cinderella Castle will return to its original white-and-blue color color scheme, replacing the look Disney introduced in 2020 with pink, deep blue, and gold accents.
When Disney announced the new color scheme for the castle at Destination D23 in 2025, the crowd of Disney fans erupted in cheers. It was the loudest applause we heard all weekend, which says something considering the event was packed with lots of exciting announcements.
Disney isn't simply reverting the castle back to its pre-2020 look, but rather attempting to restore it to its original, pristine design from Magic Kingdom's opening day in 1971.

Work began in January 2026 on Cinderella Castle's new paint job. The repainting process will continue for the near future. As it currently stands, the castle is in limbo between old and new, as seen in the photo above. Parts of the majestic edifice display the new white color, while others remain with the old pink shade.
4. Jessie's Roundup

For the second year in a row, Walt Disney World will host a campaign called Cool KIDS’ SUMMER with family-friendly activations. This year, Cool KIDS’ SUMMER takes place from May 26 – September 8, 2026, and some of the festivities will only take place during that period rather than sticking around permanently.
A temporary new attraction for Cool KIDS’ SUMMER is Jessie’s Roundup, coming to the Diamond Horseshoe in Frontierland at Magic Kingdom. The Diamond Horseshoe is currently home to table-service dining, but has been used for entertainment purposes over the years.
To celebrate Toy Story 5, Jessie’s Roundup inside the Diamond Horseshoe will feature character appearances by Jessie and Woody, as well as dancing and crafts.
We anticipate Jessie’s Roundup being a win for families with young kids visiting Magic Kingdom this summer. It’s indoors with air conditioning, the venue is already themed perfectly to Jessie, and it provides a unique way to interact with characters beyond the typical photo-and-autograph routine.
The Diamond Horseshoe will discontinue its restaurant service starting May 16, 2026. Table-service dining will return sometime in fall 2026 after Cool KIDS’ SUMMER is over.
Jessie's Roundup will run from May 26 – September 8, 2026.
5. Extended Refurbishment for Character Meet & Greet
At Magic Kingdom, four of Disney's most popular characters meet & greet with guests under one roof. Minnie Mouse, Daisy Duck, Donald Duck, and Goofy all hold character greetings inside Pete's Silly Sideshow, a circus tent at the back of Fantasyland in an area called Storybook Circus.
Pete's Silly Sideshow closed for refurbishment in January 2026, and remains closed at the time of this writing two months later. Big Top Souvenirs, the tent next door, likewise closed for refurbishment in February 2026.
Disney has not announced a reopening date for Pete's Silly Sideshow or Big Top Souvenirs, or shared what to expect when they reopen.
In the meantime, guests can meet Minnie, Daisy, Donald, and Goofy nearby the same general area in Storybook Circus, but outside of Pete's Silly Sideshow rather than indoors.
6. Walt Disney Audio-Animatronics Figure and More Changes in Carousel of Progress

The first-ever Audio-Animatronics figure depicting Walt Disney debuted at Disneyland in 2025. Now it's Magic Kingdom's turn.
Imagineers will install a new Audio-Animatronics figure of Walt inside the classic Tomorrowland ride Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress. Walt's Audio-Animatronics likeness will depict him in the 1960s. During that time, the last few years of Walt's life, the studio was busy making preparations for EPCOT and the New York World's Fair, which would include the debut version of Carousel of Progress.
Walt will address guests in the opening scene of the ride, before the attraction transitions into its main story hosted by the John character and his American family.
Disney says to expect other changes to Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress in addition to the Walt Disney Audio-Animatronics figure, but the company has not revealed details just yet. The ride's most recent major update was in 1994, so its “present-day” finale scene, pictured above, is quite dated now. For example, the characters in the scene marvel at “modern” inventions such as car phones and laser discs.
Disney has not announced a timeline for the changes to Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress. The ride remains open at the time of this writing with no announced closing date.
7. New Cars Rides Replacing Tom Sawyer Island

Piston Peak National Park is the name of a new subsection of Frontierland at Magic Kingdom. It will be home to two new rides based on Pixar’s “Cars” franchise. One of the rides will be an “off-road” thrill ride while the other will be family-friendly.

As the area’s name implies, Disney will emulate a national park aesthetic, going for a rugged atmosphere with lots of trees, rocks, a river, and rugged terrain. Other than these basic descriptions, Disney hasn’t shared many other details about what to expect with the two new “Cars” rides.

Concept art depicts mountainous features, which could add some new landmarks to Magic Kingdom's skyline.
To be clear, this is not a duplicate of Cars Land from Disney California Adventure. Radiator Springs is not coming to Magic Kingdom.
Construction is underway on the foundation for Piston Peak National Park at Magic Kingdom. The area replaces a portion of Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America, both of which closed permanently in 2025.
Disney has not announced an opening timeframe for Piston Peak National Park, but Mickey Visit predicts this project will open in 2029.
8. A New Land Dedicated to Disney Villains

One of most highly anticipated Disney ambitions in recent memory is Villains Land coming to Magic Kingdom.
Details remain scarce, Disney has said there will be two attractions. One attraction seems to be a roller coaster, seen at the bottom of the concept art above. Maleficent in dragon form is featured in the artwork, but otherwise no other specific Villains are confirmed just yet.
Disney Imagineers have shared briefly about their artistic inspirations for Villains Land’s aesthetic. Other than that, though, specifics about what to expect from the attractions or ride systems are still under wraps.
Note that “Villains Land” may not be the formal name of the area. Initially Disney used this term officially to describe the project. Then later the company began referring to it as a “Villains-themed land,” simply as a description rather than an actual name. As a shorthand, we’ll keep using Villains Land until Disney specifies further.

Construction for Villains Land is happening immediately adjacent to the plot of land designated for Piston Peak National Park. Villains Land will reside partially on property formerly belonging to Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America, and partially on previously undeveloped land just north of this area, beyond the former railroad track perimeter.
Disney has not announced an opening timeframe for Villains Land, but Mickey Visit predicts it will open in 2030 at the soonest.
9. Multi-Year Abridged Route for Walt Disney World Railroad
During regular operations, Walt Disney World Railroad takes riders on a gentle tour around the perimeter of Magic Kingdom. Guests can choose to hop off at train stations located in Frontierland, Fantasyland, or Main Street, U.S.A., or take a roundtrip.
However, currently Walt Disney World Railroad operates an abridged road to accommodate construction of Villains Land. The train simply travels back and forth between the Fantasyland and Main Street, U.S.A., stations. Along the way, guests hear a new narration starring Stitch from Lilo & Stitch.
This abridged route began in July 2025 and will continue for the foreseeable future, likely for several years. Mickey Visit predicts Villains Land will open in 2030 at the earliest, so it could be quite a bit of time before guests can travel by rail completely around Magic Kigndom.
Recent Magic Kingdom Additions Already Open
All of the projects listed above arrive in addition to an already busy few years for Magic Kingdom. There's a lot of new attractions to experience if you haven't visited this theme park in a while.
In the past three years alone: TRON Lightcycle / Run, a new roller coaster, opened in Tomorrowland; Tiana's Bayou Adventure, pictured above, replaced Splash Mountain with a new story, characters, and music; Country Bear Musical Jamboree updated the classic Audio-Animatronics show with new music and songs from Disney movies; Disney Starlight: Dream the Night Away debuted as Magic Kingdom's first nighttime parade in nearly a decade; and The Beak and Barrel, themed to Pirates of the Caribbean, opened as Magic Kingdom's first bar.
There’s a lot to look forward to in the coming years at Walt Disney World, and we’re excited to continue to bring you coverage of all it right here at Mickey Visit. We will be watching closely and sharing any details as we get them.
