Disney Sued Over Bedbug Allegations

Disney's All-Star Sports Resort room

Walt Disney World is being sued in a lawsuit alleging that a guest of Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort in 2022 was bitten by bedbugs. The lawsuit was filed by David Besse in Orange Circuit Court against Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.

He is seeking damages exceeding $50,000 due to allegations that he was bitten numerous times by cimicidae, also known as bedbugs. The lawsuit alleges that Disney failed to inspect its hotel rooms and take required steps to prevent bedbugs.

The lawsuit states, “As a direct and proximate result of Defendant’s negligence, Plaintiff, David Besse, suffered scarring, bodily injury, pain and suffering, disability, mental anguish, loss of the capacity for the enjoyment of life, medical expenses, loss of earnings, loss of the ability to earn money, financial loss, and property damage. The losses are either permanent or continuing, and Plaintiff will suffer the losses in the future.”

For those unfamiliar, bedbugs are small, wingless insects that feed on blood from humans and other animals. These insects tend to hide in habitual places like mattresses, box springs, bed frames, and headboards. The reason why the issue of bedbugs comes up so often in relation to hotels is that hotels have a constant flow of travelers bringing luggage, clothing, and personal items from all over the world. Each new guest is a new potential carrier.

Hotels prevent bedbugs by checking high-risk areas every time a room turns over. That includes mattress seams, box springs, headboards, and upholstered furniture. Laundry is washed and dried with high levels of heat, which kills all life stages of bedbugs.

Disney is known for its intense cleanliness, which was driven by Walt Disney’s original vision and maintained by cast members. Disney resort hotels are widely recognized for their high cleanliness standards, but like any large hospitality operation, bedbugs aren’t impossible. But it’s important to note that this situation is an allegation, not a fact.

Disney has actively been refurbishing the All-Star Resorts with ongoing work to refresh rooms and other amenities at the resorts. Disney is currently at work on refurbishing the rooms at the All-Star Movies Resort. That work is set to start in late May 2026. You can see all the details on that upcoming refurbishment work and other refurbishments at All-Stars here.

While the All-Star Resorts are Disney’s most affordable hotel option at Walt Disney World, the rooms are kept up very well. Disney has been actively refurbishing all of these rooms to keep them at a modern standard. I stay in all resort levels at Walt Disney World frequently and I am quite content staying in these rooms. You can read our deeper look into this in our review that questions if Disney World’s cheapest rooms are actually worth it.

It amazes me that they can deliver this quality of modern room on propety for this low price point. When I compare these hotel rooms to other similarly priced hotels in Orlando or Anaheim, where Disneyland is located, nothing else delivers in the quality of the room or the amenities. Disney has announced a new discount offer that starts at $99 per night for stays at this All-Star Resort.
