Disney Skips Another Opportunity to Improve Star Wars Land With Latest Change

Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, located in both Walt Disney World and Disneyland, is plagued by one major problem that we keep advocating for Disney to fix to help guest engagement with the land.

A new character change coming soon to Disney's Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World is a missed opportunity to improve Star Wars land by fixing this big mistake. Let's discuss what this new change is and why going in another direction would have been a better move towards fixing the issues in Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge.

Darth Vader Character Interaction Changing

Starting tomorrow, September 25, guests will meet Darth Vader at Hollywood Studios at the Star Tours queue. Disney World is changing Darth Vader's meet and greet location due to the permanent closure of Star Wars: Launch Bay and Animation Courtyard.

Putting Vader near Star Tours makes sense in some ways. It is the other attraction related to Star Wars in Hollywood Studios. But also, there's a giant Star Wars land just a short walk away from Star Tours. Why not move Lord Vader to Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge instead?

Disney Needs to Get Rid of the Star Wars Land Timeline

Millennium Falcon Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland

Galaxy's Edge is set on Black Spire Outpost on Batuu, which is a planet located on the Outer Rim in the Star Wars universe. The time period is between the events of The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker. Currently, the characters we see regularly in Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge are those from the newest Star Wars films, often referred to as the “sequels.” Roaming characters in the land often feature Kylo Ren, Rey, Chewbacca, and Stormtroopers.

It's about time that Disney got rid of the timeline in Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. This is Disney's biggest mistake with this land, as it limits the interactions guests can have. Removing the timeline entirely would open up the land to more opportunities to incorporate ALL the Star Wars stories. Rather than moving Darth Vader to the Star Tours queue, they should have just moved him to Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge!

Luke and R2-D2 roaming Galaxy's Edge

Walt Disney World has been much slower to bend the timeline by adding new characters to their version of Star Wars land, with only The Mandalorian & Grogu making the list of new additions. But over at Disneyland, we've seen Ahsoka, Sabine Wren, and most notably, Luke Skywalker and R2-D2. Luke Skywalker and R2-D2 were part of a limited-time seasonal celebration, Season of the Force. But this was a good step in the right direction, one that we hope Disney is getting closer to.

It is long overdue for Disney to throw it all out the window and bring in the classic Star Wars characters and creatures in the land. This would have been a great first step with Darth Vader, but I am hopeful that this change is coming soon, especially since we've seen Disneyland start to become more flexible.
