Guests Worried About Rain During Hurricane Season at Disney World

Cinderella Castle in rain

In the past week, more than 20 posts from guests have expressed stress about rain for their October trip to Walt Disney World in the popular Walt Disney World Tips & Tricks Facebook group. Some posts have been more dramatic than others, including one that shared a screenshot of the forecast showing daily rain and asked group members whether canceling their trip is the best option. While some guests are considering canceling their trips, others are having regrets about attending the popular Halloween party at Magic Kingdom with such heavy rain expected.

Unfortunately for Halloween fans, the most popular nights of Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party take place during hurricane season in Florida. Each year we see the same posts voicing the same anxieties over being rained out during a trip to Disney World in October and November. The posts have become so frequent over the past month that many members of the group have voiced their frustration in the comments, which has led to many users deleting their original posts. One group member offered a blunt reminder about the unpredictability of Florida weather, writing: “Please understand that you are coming to Florida where the weather changes every 10 minutes. The forecast 7 days from now is NOT accurate. The forecast 7 minutes from now is NOT accurate.” This group member isn’t wrong. The weather forecast on the weather apps is constantly changing, and it makes it hard to predict when rain will happen.

Hurricane season in Florida takes place from about June through November and can bring some of the wettest weather of the year to Disney World. While actual hurricanes impacting the parks are pretty uncommon, Central Florida will experience intense afternoon thunderstorms during this time of the year. These storms can bring heavy rain in a matter of minutes and could include high winds, lightning, and temporary attraction closures.

If we look at a snapshot of the weather for Walt Disney World for the week of October 5 through October 13, we can see each day calls for thunderstorms. These forecasts are what is causing so much panic in the Disney fan groups since it does appear that each day will be raining. But putting too much confidence in these forecasts, and panicking about them, is the biggest mistake I see guests making this time of the year.

Just because the forecast says thunderstorms for each day doesn’t mean they last that long. It is more typical of the rainy weather to come in during the afternoon before clearing up and passing on by. This is why it is helpful to not panic when searching the weather forecast in Florida. It’s not uncommon at all for the weather forecast to look this dire for each day during this time of the year.

I don’t think guests should ever cancel their Disney World trip after seeing a forecast like this! The rainy season at Disney World doesn’t necessarily mean it will rain the entire day. Most of the time, the rainstorms will come and go.

It’s best to show up prepared for rain rather than being caught off guard. Always pack a poncho in your bag and be ready to throw it on when the rain arrives. If you do not want to be outside in the rain, find an indoor ride, especially the ones with long indoor queues, to wait out the storm. Most of the time, you will come back outside to a clear sky since rainstorms can move by quickly.

Disney World is built to handle rain, and this is why there are so many rides with long, indoor queues to help guests stay dry during these moments. For those fan-favorite outdoor rides, it’s always best to do those in the morning, just in case the rain doesn’t clear up in the afternoon.

So do not stress. Do not cancel your Disney World trip. Pack a poncho and enjoy your time! Daily rain is just a part of life in central Florida this time of year.
