Disneyland Resort regularly closes rides for refurbishment to keep attractions running smoothly. Most of the time, these temporary closures stick to a predetermined schedule, but timelines can occasionally shift. We keep a running list of all Disneyland refurbishments here.
One previously announced ride closure at Disney California Adventure keeps being extended over and over. In this article, we’ll share what we know and provide context for what might be happening behind the scenes. This attraction was was initially scheduled for a brief, two-day closure on February 27 and 28, 2026, with plans to reopen on March 1. Since then, though, the ride’s refurbishment keeps being extended day by day. It’s now March 10 at the time of this writing and the ride is still closed.
This closure follows Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind’s earlier refurbishment this year, when the ride was closed from January 5-22, 2026.
Disney California Adventure’s calendar currently shows Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind as being operational on March 11, 2026. However, the past few days, the calendar has shown the ride reopening the next day, only for the next day to arrive and the calendar to be abridged to say the ride is still closed.

Possible Reasons for the Ride’s Refurbishment Extension
At a recent Disneyland Resort business update for the media, we heard from the leader of attraction engineering about Disneyland’s approach to ride refurbishments. Previously we shared other stories from this day, including Disneyland’s plans for attracting young families, aims for changes to security improvements, sweeping cast member changes, and what happened when the Disneyland Monorail got stuck for hours.
During the business update, the attraction engineering leader explained how Disneyland categorizes ride maintenance into three buckets:
- safety and regulatory maintenance, which usually happens overnight
- response maintenance, the result of an unexpected issue during a theme park day
- scheduled refurbishment, a planned period of upkeep
In the case of Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind, we wonder if whatever work was being done was initially set as “safety and regulatory maintenance,” and then the refurbishment crew found something that pushed the attraction into the “response maintenance” category that pushed it into a multi-day closure. Typically those are not multi-day closures, but the last-minute nature of the closure makes me believe this is not scheduled maintenance.
The ride had not been on the schedule and quickly was added and then closed. The closure has now been continually extended.
Daily extensions of ride refurbishments are not standard for Disney attractions, making the current situation with Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind abnormal. Based on the style of the extensions it appears that they continue to hope the issue will be resolved in one night and then closure is pushed out again when that doesn’t happen.
Currently, the ride remains closed. We’ll continue to provide updates here on Mickey Visit on this and all Disneyland ride refurbishments.
