We’re excited to finally witness the debut of “The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure,” which replaced “Voyage of the Little Mermaid” at Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World. Advertised as a show to feature stunning new set pieces and cutting-edge effects, many guests are wondering just how good this show is – and how it compares to the previous show.
We were fortunate enough to attend a preview event for the show and are excited to share our thoughts on “The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure.”

What is Different from Previous Little Mermaid Show?
“The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure” combines new effects like screens combined with live actors and puppets, lasers, and bubbles. You can easily see the new technology updates in the show.
There is also a new song introduced to the show, “Kiss the Girl,” which joins returning songs like “Part of Your World” and “Poor Unfortunate Souls.”
The theater has been refreshed with new, comfortable seating and has changed from the previous design to fit more in line with Ariel’s grotto.
New Little Mermaid Show Outshines Original
Much like the previous show, this condensed version of The Little Mermaid jumps forward in time significantly. You’ll notice this big-time jump from “Poor Unfortunate Souls” to “Kiss the Girl.” This makes sense to condense the story into a shorter version.
I was really blown away by the effects and the seamless use of screens as they transformed into live actors or puppets! Ursula on screen transforms straight into Ursula as a massive puppet which is mindblowing. Most notably, the fight scene between Eric, Ariel, and Ursula was really well done!
The puppetry effects are also especially great, I had a hard time even noticing the actors controlling the puppets and everything blended seamlessly together. This was a large improvement over the original.
The show also incorporates more lines from Prince Eric and focuses more strongly on Ariel’s story. It was great to see Prince Eric actually have some speaking lines as he didn’t in the previous show. This show easily outshines the original and is a must-see during your day at Hollywood Studios.

“The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure” opens on May 27th along with the new “Disney Villains: Unfairly Ever After” and has also been added as a Lightning Lane option. This opening date is also happening at the same time that Disney introduces Cool Kid Summer across the parks with new character entertainment and interactions.
We are still waiting for an opening date for the new nighttime parade, Disney Starlight, opening at Magic Kingdom later this summer.
