Disney CEO Bob Iger Wants New Figment Project Due to Character Popularity

The Walt Disney Company Meeting of the Shareholders typically includes a few surprises for Disney fans listening along plus new updates worth reporting on. Today's meeting is a good reminder that shareholders are often big fans themselves!

Disney CEO, Bob Iger, revealed in today's meeting just how popular Figment the dragon is beyond his presence in EPCOT. Disney fans love Figment and anytime he's mentioned our ears always perk up.

Keep reading for Iger's quotes on everyone's favorite purple dragon and why we hope it could mean more Figment content.

Journey Into Imagination With Figment

During the shareholder call, Disney CEO Bob Iger was asked if Disney would consider expanding Figment content into other areas outside of the theme parks. Iger reacted to this question by first addressing how often he's asked about Figment saying, “This is my 24th shareholder call, my 18th as CEO, and I think the question about Figment has been asked about 15 times. I call him good old Figment.”

Iger went on to acknowledge how popular Figment is stating, ““We know that he’s popular with shareholders because of the fact that they ask questions about him all the time. But we also know that he’s popular at EPCOT, where you can meet him and experience Journey Into Imagination.”

Iger discussed that he plans to bring Disney's creative team into the conversation and explore new projects with Figment. Iger went on to say, “I’ll tell you why — I’ve been asked this so many times that I am going to ask our creative teams to consider making some form of series or short-form videos of Figment. Because obviously, he’s more popular than just a walk-around character in our parks and resorts.”

We didn't get any further details nor a timeline for this potential new project but I do think it's positive to see Bob Iger acknowledge Figment's popularity and a push towards more content. Which I would hope could then eventually translate into a long overdue update for Figment's ride in EPCOT!

It's Time to Update Journey Into Imagination

While any new content relating to Figment is welcomed, I'm not sure the answer is to create a series or a set of “short-form” videos. I also hesitate to get too excited, especially as we just saw Disney pull the plug on the highly anticipated Princess and the Frog series. It's hard to build excitement for a potential new series when I'm still mourning the loss of that one.

The better direction, if Disney were to truly acknowledge Figment's popularity, would be to finally give him his due and update Journey Into Imagination With Figment. This is something Disney fans have been wanting for years! And not just Disney fans, even Disney Legend Josh Gad called this out on a recent EPCOT visit asking Disney to “give this guy the ride he deserves.”

In November 2023, Disney Parks posted a Reel with Figment visiting Walt Disney Imagineering with the caption, “Figment recently journeyed to Walt Disney Studios to meet Cast Members and gather new sparks of imagination. We can’t wait to see what Figment dreams up next.” Of course, this video generated excitement amongst Disney fans with the hope this meant we would finally get some news that Journey Into Imagination With Figment would be receiving an update. But since this Instagram post we have received no news, no updates, and no followup on what this Reel was truly about.

I won't say no to a Figment series or some type of animated short, but I would personally love to see Disney put that energy into updating his ride instead! Either way, it's good for Figment fans to hear Iger address his popularity. The more we push, the more Figment we might get! After all, Disney did bring back the Figment character interaction to EPCOT after many years of guests asking for its return.
