Favorite Disneyland Park Ride Being Added to Genie+ “Temporarily”

Going into the new year, several exciting new additions are in the works at Disneyland, especially in the Critter Country and New Orleans Square section of the park.

The reimagining of Splash Mountain into Tiana's Bayou Adventure is currently underway and projected to open in late 2024 and construction of the Haunted Mansion area expansion will soon be starting in late January.

While these experiences are unavailable to guests until later in the year, Disney is temporarily adding a fan-favorite attraction to Genie+. Keep reading for everything you need to know!

Which Favorite Ride Will Be Temporarily Added to Genie+?

While attractions in the nearby area of the park undergo construction, Pirates of the Caribbean in New Orleans Square will be temporarily added to Genie+. With other rides in this section of the park not available until later in the year, the Genie Plus addition will provide increased capacity for the service. We believe the move is likely also to ensure that the Genie Plus service remains popular for Disneyland guests. The move to add an attraction for the service does two things. It increases the perceived value of Genie+ and also adds additional Genie+ slot capacity so that the service does not need to be marked as sold out on peak days. Whatever the motivation for adding Genie Plus to Pirates of the Caribbean to Genie Plus at Disneyland, we can most certainly say that this is about the Genie Plus experience and not about a need for shorter wait times for the Pirates attraction.

We are not thrilled that they are adding Genie Plus here because it will cause what is a relatively short line to be longer on average for guests waiting in the standby queue.

This is similar to the move that Disney made when adding The Little Mermaid – Ariel's Undersea Adventure in California Adventure to Genie+. Even though the Little Mermaid ride didn't really need Lightning Lane to move the line along faster, this move was also likely to increase the perceived value of the service to demonstrate that there are more rides available with it even if the service isn't that helpful for that specific attraction.

In the Critter Country and New Orleans Square area of the park, there will be a lot of construction during the year as Tiana's Bayou Adventure is expected to open in late 2024 (see our speculation on when the Splash Mountain retheme will open at both Disneyland and Disney World).

Starting on January 22, 2o24, the Haunted Mansion will also be closing for a lengthy amount of time to add an expanded outdoor queue, a new retail shop, and an elevator exit from the attraction for guests with disabilities. We anticipate that the Haunted Mansion will likely be closed until this summer based on information about the closure and the opening of Tiana's Bayou Adventure. Disneyland did mention that the 2024 Halloween season would feature “uniquely themed attractions,” so we're expecting that the construction will be complete by late August when the Disneyland Halloween season begins.

In the meantime, while these rides are under construction, Pirates of the Caribbean will be a temporary addition to the Genie+ service. Pirates of the Caribbean is definitely one of our not-to-miss rides to get the full Disney experience!

When Will Pirates of the Caribbean Be Temporarily Added to Genie+?

Pirates of the Caribbean will be added to Genie+ starting January 22, 2024. There hasn't yet been an end date shared for the time this attraction will be available on Genie+.

We anticipate that the attraction will be offered on Genie Plus until at least the Haunted Mansion and potentially also Tiana's Bayou Adventure are online for guests. If they do decided to wait until Tiana's Bayou Adventure is also open it would mean that the service would be available for Pirates of the Caribbean for a majority of 2024.

We could also see Disney deciding to keep Genie Plus active on the attraction even beyond the time that the attractions are open once again. FastPass was previously offered for Pirates of the Caribbean in the early 2000s. Generally we were pleased that they settled on not including this attraction with the new service. At one point the service was going to be offered as part of the MaxPass service before the parks closed for COVID, but it never happened.
