Disneyland is preparing to bring back a fan-favorite experience that transforms one of its most iconic attractions. The overlay returned seasonally for the past few years, and this year, it returns right before some major changes to Disneyland’s newest theme park land.
This overlay is always extremely popular during its limited runs, offering a fresh perspective on a classic high-speed adventure, and guests are eager to see this update take over once again. Keep reading for all of the details on its return and what we know so far. Disneyland is Bringing Back Hyperspace Mountain
For the past few years, the run of the Star Wars overlay of Space Mountain, called “Hyperspace Mountain,” has coincided with the Season of the Force celebration. This year, it is still returning, even though there is no Season of the Force this year. However, the timing of this overlay’s return is significant, which we will discuss more below.

Hyperspace Mountain will return to Disneyland on April 28. This transformation replaces the traditional Space Mountain soundtrack visuals with a high-octane Star Wars theme. During the experience, riders are thrust into the cockpit of an X-wing fighter as part of the Blue Squadron, navigating a frantic battle against the Empire. The overlay features a custom John Williams-inspired score and digital projections of TIE fighters and Star Destroyers, making it a must-do for any Star Wars fan.
While there is no full-blown Star Wars celebration happening this year, there are some very big Star Wars-related changes coming to the park.
There isn’t an end date yet revealed for Hyperspace Mountain, but because of all of the Star Wars excitement happening over the next couple of months (detailed below), I anticipate that the overlay will likely stick around through at least mid-May, if not early June.
It could also be that we see an unusually long run for this overlay, like what’s happening for Soarin’ Over California over in Disney California Adventure, but that is more likely tied to a new version of Soarin’ debuting later this summer.
On April 29, the day after this overlay returns, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will receive some major changes that essentially relaunch the timeline for part of the land. Disneyland will bring original trilogy characters to Batuu, including Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo throughout Black Spire Outpost, while stories from The Mandalorian and Ahsoka remain part of the land. Additionally, we will finally get the iconic John Williams’ Star Wars music in the area, along with changes to select dining and merchandise experiences to align with the timeline shift.
Shortly after this relaunch, at the end of May, a new version of the Millennium Falcon ride will debut in Galaxy’s Edge. This is one of 7 new rides and updates coming to the Disneyland Resort this year and beyond. After taking off from Batuu and going to Tatooine, riders will get to choose their destination between Bespin, Endor, and Coruscant. You can see all the details about how Disney is improving the ride here.
Additionally, the park is hosting several Star Wars Nite events starting April 28. These separately ticketed, after-hours parties offer a more immersive way to celebrate the franchise with rare character sightings, thematic dishes, special entertainment, and unique photo opportunities.
