Disneyland Extends Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Closure For Refurbishment

The popular Big Thunder Mountain Railroad roller coaster at Disneyland Park is currently closed for what is planned to be a multi-month refurbishment. The ride closed at the beginning of September, and while a reopening date was briefly visible on the refurbishment calendar, the closure has now been extended.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Closure Extended at Disneyland

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad closed for refurbishment earlier this month, on September 2, 2025. While the ride was originally scheduled to reopen on October 25, per an update to the refurbishment calendar over the weekend, we saw that this was just removed from the calendar. There is now no posted reopening date for the attraction.

When we reached out for a comment, Disneyland officials shared with us that sometimes, due to the complexity of certain ride refurbishments, the team wants a bit more time in the final stages of inspections and approvals before sharing a reopening date. They said that to allow for this, a reopening date will be posted closer to the completion of the refurbishment.

Unlike the big refurbishment of the version of the ride happening on the other coast at Magic Kingdom, we do not anticipate any substantial changes or new additions to the Disneyland ride when it reopens.

Disney will occasionally schedule routine refurbishments for all attractions to make sure they are in good shape for guests. At Disneyland, some of the other longer refurbishments happening include Casey Jr. Circus Train and Storybook Land Canal Boats, and Radiator Springs Racers. There are also some Disney California Adventure closures coming up, including Goofy's Sky School and Mickey's PhilharMagic.

The Magic Kingdom version of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad closed in January of this year for a bigger refurbishment that will last through 2026.

In addition to a top-to-bottom refurbishment of the ride, there will also be some new additions coming to the attraction. This includes a new moment when, as the trains go underground into caverns of phosphorescent pools, the rainbow caverns will transform to red caverns with a loud crack of thunder.
