Disney World Making Change to New Ride That Opened Less Than Year Ago

Walt Disney World attractions sometimes change over time with updated technology, as recently installed at Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, or new scenes replacing what was there before, as with the ongoing transformation of Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress. Usually such alterations focus on older attractions, but that’s not the case for some tweaks Disney just made.

Walt Disney Imagineering introduced changes to a new Disney World attraction that opened less than a year ago to bring in fun new updates. We have details on what’s different and the timeline for the changes. Mickey Visit brings you the latest Disney news and planning resources, including construction scheduled at two Disney World hotels and new Disney World menu items.

Changes to Zootopia Attraction at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Zootopia: Better Zoogether! opened at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Walt Disney World in November 2025, coinciding with the theatrical release of Zootopia 2. The attraction is a 3D show featuring special effects inside the park’s Tree of Life. It replaced It’s Tough to Be a Bug!, a show inspired by A Bug’s Life, which occupied the same space from 1998 to 2025.

Better Zoogether celebrates Zoogether Day, a holiday in Zootopia honoring the unity among its species and habitats. Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde are part of the adventure on screen, and Officer Clawhauser appears in the theater as an Audio-Animatronics character.

Despite the fact that Better Zoogether opened less than a year ago, Disney already rolled out changes to the attraction.

Mayor Winddancer, the horse character introduced in Zootopia 2, now appears at the beginning of the film to welcome the citizens of Zootopia to the Zoogether Day celebration.

As before, Imagineering partnered with Walt Disney Animation Studios on the new scene. Pictured above is an animator performing a reference for the scene, as well as an early rendering and the finished look in the attraction.

Actor Patrick Warburton reprised his voice role as Mayor Winddancer from the movie. Above is a photo of when he was first announced as the character during a D23 event in 2025.

Imagineers also said they added “extra magic” throughout Better Zoogether, implying lighting and audio effects but not mentioning specific additions.

“We have all our show teams here,” said David, the attraction’s Story Lead with Walt Disney Imagineering, in a social media video captured during the installation. “We have our audio teams, lighting teams, all the special effects in the theater, even the figure animation team, just making sure all the updates are working the way we want them to and all the timing is lining up.”

The new components to the attraction debuted for guests on July 29, 2026.

In a somewhat unique approach, the updates didn’t require any downtime for the attraction. Installation was performed overnight, without Better Zoogether ever closing for guests. Disney also pulled off an overnight turnaround for the recent addition of the Mandalorian and Grogu into Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. In both cases, the changes related to screen-based media, which could be developed independently of closing the attractions.
