Disney Hits Major Milestone on First Ever Marvel Spider-Man Roller Coaster

Multiple new roller coasters are in various stages of development and construction at Disney theme parks around the world, destined to join the ranks of classics like Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain. Disney just shared a first look at one of its upcoming coasters.

Disney’s first Spider-Man roller coaster is on the horizon, and the company revealed the first official photograph of the coaster-in-progress at its construction site. Mickey Visit brings you the latest Disney news and planning resources, including Disney cracking down on Disney Vacation Club point rentals and a sneak peek of upcoming rides based on two Disney animated classics.

Disney’s First Spider-Man Roller Coaster

A Spider-Man roller coaster is under construction at Shanghai Disneyland, and its arrival marks a few firsts. The ride will be Disney’s first coaster attraction starring Spider-Man, and it will be part of a whole new Spider-Man land.

Disney first announced the upcoming coaster in 2024, sharing two pieces of concept art. While Disney refrained from sharing many details about the ride or its story, the coaster seems to traverse both indoor and outdoor areas.

The ride also seems to include Audio-Animatronics figures of Spider-Man in action, involved in a dangerous escapade. If these Audio-Animatronics figures are anything like the “stuntronics” that swing through the air at Disney California Adventure, they could be very high-tech and capable of advanced motion.

On April 1, 2026, Shanghai Disneyland posted a photo of the track for the Spider-Man coaster installed onsite. The photo above is the first official look at the attraction’s shiny red track. The twists and turns look fun, and we notice what might be a launch platform on the far right.

Disney has not announced an opening date or a name for the Spider-Man coaster yet.

In addition to the coaster, a new Spider-Man elevator-drop ride in the style of The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror and Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission – BREAKOUT! is in the works for Hong Kong Disneyland. Disney revealed plans for this ride in 2024 at the same time as announcing Shanghai’s coaster. Concept art shows Doctor Octopus, aka Doc Ock, involved in the story!

Full Circle for Current Imagineer, Former Universal Artist

Though the upcoming attraction at Shanghai Disneyland is Disney’s first Spider-Man roller coaster, it’s not the first Spidey-centric ride in a Disney park. That distinction goes to WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure, which opened at Disney California Adventure in 2021 and has since been duplicated at Disney Adventure World.

Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man facade

To date, though, Spider-Man’s most famous ride remains The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, which opened in 1999 at Universal Islands of Adventure before Disney’s 2009 acquisition of Marvel. Many theme park fans regard The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man as the greatest attraction of all time.

A man named Scott Trowbridge led the creative team for The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man and its surrounding land, Marvel Super Hero Island. As fate would have it, Trowbridge later transitioned to Walt Disney Imagineering and, in 2024, was the person who revealed Disney’s plans for the upcoming Spider-Man rides to the world onstage at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event.

Avengers Campus construction walls

In California, an expansion of Avengers Campus is under construction at Disney California Adventure that will add two new rides, which Trowbridge is also overseeing. I think it’s cool how the same person has stewarded Spider-Man’s legacy around the world across different theme park companies.
